I have a 1978 460 from a 78 f250 2wd and will be putting the 460 into a 1979 f250 4wd. The 4wd currently has a 300 I6. I found a bellhousing & flywheel at a local junkyard out of a 86 f350 460. Any issues with this 86 flywheel an bellhousing going on the 78 460 engine? I have read some chatter on here about hydro clutches on the later 80:s trucks. What problems might i have if the 86 has a hydro clutch?
86 does have a hydro clutch but on the 460 its an external slave not the internal hydraulic throwout like on the f150. I don't know why you couldnt fab up your own bellcrank brackets to make that bell work. are you sure the truck had a 460? aluminum 460 gas and diesel bells look the same but won't interchange at all. cast iron 351m 400 bells are same as 460
The fellow I do some part-time mechanic work for used to own an 86 F350 wrecker. It had a 460 with an aluminum clutch housing with an external cylinder hydraulic clutch. It also had a 10.5" clutch which seemed awful small for a 460. Balancing might be a problem, I think 79 was the year Ford changed the balance on the 460.
Hi, I am just doing almost this this same swap. Engine went in today. My 460 is replacing a 351M. Your '78 460 is internally balanced, so if you want to use the '86 flywheel you will need to remove the counterweight. I ground it off untill it was close and then had a drivetrain shop "neutral" balance it. ($50) The '86 bellhousing can be modified to accept the bellcrank & pivot ball mount from a 351M/400.(see pics) The cast iron bellhousing from a 351M/400 is not exactly the same as the '86 aluminum bellhousing. The '86 is about 3/8" longer. Some people who use the 351M/400 bell have clearance problems because of this and some don't seem to. (?)
Difference in bellhousing lengths
Diference in bellcrank mounting point thicknesses
Modifications to mounting point to change from Hydraulic clutch to mechanical
Main pieces removed
Cleaned up and test fitting pivot ball to mount bell crank
Mocking up to make sure it will work
Finished bellhousing mods ( I used JB Welt to patch the holes before painting)

I was wrong. I've recently learned that 429/460 bells are deeper than 351m/400 bells and that the 460 flywheel is 40 lbs and sticks back farther from the block as a 360/390 flywheel. i read in a few other threads that if using a 351/400 bell and having clutch clearance problems with the 460 flywheel, you can use an fe flywheel on the 460 with the 351/400 bell. havn't tried it myself...just what I heard...something to consider
1040, I have an engine question. I am looking for a engine for a possible swap- what is the power range for your 300/6 cyl? I can pm you so as not to interfere with your thread.
Nice work Bgas! That would be worth a thread! Since my post I have changed the direction of my project a little and went with a steel flywheel and a lakewood blowproof bell.
