Did I get a good deal?
Hi guys, new member, so go easy. I come from a short career as a diesel engineer with John Deere, so I know my way around diesels (though I'm glad I don't own a Deere ). Oddly enough, this is my first time owning a diesel. Anyway, finalizing a purchase right now, here are the specifics:
-2000 7.3L 4WD Excursion Limited, the nice red and brown color in good shape.
-160k on the ticker
-New tires, brakes, recent flushes/changes on all major fluids (coolant, oil, trans, diffs, etc.)
-Fuel filters done every 10k, fuel additives used to keep things clean, oil changes every 4-5k, recent vacuum pump and glow plug maintenance
-Interior in good shape, has the backup sensors and tow package as well as the factory cd changer, all functional
-Issues: needs hood struts (cheap), rear window lock fixed (cheap) and eventually an outer front passenger axle shaft seal (hopefully not too pricey)
We came to terms at $12k. It's a couple grand over KBB, but the 7.3L is to blame for that and I'm ok with it. I won't be towing much (the occasional Moab trip), it'll be mostly used for hauling a pair of giant dogs to and from Idaho. The mpg of the diesel and the space swayed us, plus I feel better buying American.
Any thoughts? I ran the reports, everything looks good, and the test drive and inspection (by me) showed that it's in solid shape. Thanks,
Geoff

Good to hear, it should be a fun vehicle. As for the Deere, they're not all bad, I'm just all too familiar with their engines and their problems. I think there's a reason Deere engines go in tractors and International and Cummins engines go in trucks.

You did good. I have looked for months and just bought an 01 Limited 4X4 7.3 with 143,000 for $12,000. Have had offers from strangers to buy it. In my research, An X in the same condition is going for $17,000 all day long on CARS.com. The 7.3 really jacks the price up. Mine has new tires and I just changed the water pump. Next is suspension. I also bought a used Superchip from a neighbor and on the perf tow tune, I am getting a consistent 16 mpg versus 14 mpg without it. I am just taking it real easy as mine still has the factory tranny.

I love my 6.0. Seems if you cleared 75k you were good forever.
A good deal is a deal that was worth it to you. If the truck is worth 12k or more to you, then you got a good deal. That's about what I paid for my 04 6.0 with 170k on it during the spike of diesel fuel @ $5/gal and they couldn't sell a diesel to save their lives. And I drove 150 miles to get it.
