We have a 2008 Ford F650 Box truck with a Cummins diesel that recently had the check engine light come on. We took it to a local truck service center and they told us it came on from coolant leaks. Keep in mind that the engine never overheated or was low on coolant (it was checked on a daily basis). They charged us about $250.00 to tighten some clamps and reset the light. The next day the light came on again but was off the next time it was driven. Does any one know that will make a diesel engine throw a ce code? Do these trucks use an OBD2 interface? The coolant leak thing sounds like BS to me. Any feed back????
Did the shop add additional coolant? Did you check were the coolant level was after the repair? I always make sure its at the max level sight glass. These coolant sensors are very sensitive. Had lots of problems with these and trust me, I am lucky I had allready established a good rapor with my customers or I doubt they would have believed me. If the coolant goes down even to the min mark you will get a check engine light or even a stop engine light if it gets severe enough. This doesnt necessarily mean that your engine will overheat because there is still enough coolant in the system. It just means that the coolant sensor is picking up on this condition. I would recommend removing the sensor from the reservoir and seeing if the check engine light turns on. If it does then the ECM response is working properly. I rec replacing the resevoir and the sensor together, then make sure the coolant level is at the max sight window.
