Ok so i found this guy... 1988 F350 7.3 IDI 4 wheel drive auto 4 door.... Missing the tail gate, some rust on lower back front fenders and bedsides. doors are dinged up a bit but not rusted. and the interior needs some work. mostly a complete new drivers seat.
My biggest question is where can i get restoration parts? as lmc only has parts for the 250 and lower... i know the 250 and 350 share a lot, but i would need rear door skins and some interior stuff like the drivers seat foam and cover.
I can get the truck for $1500, i know the owner, and i know he has replaced the tanks, lines, and a few other things. the steering column doesnt tilt anymore as it was broken and he just had it welded solid.
im not too concerned about off road. mostly snow, deep, deep snow. i used to have a chevy extended cab long box 6.5T so i know they are decent in fields and ditches.
Space is a HUGE deal, my parents dont get it, but they also drive expeditions... My ranger is a super cab, but its not like those jump seats do anything good... And with doing search and Rescue, space is sort of on the important side of things. not to mention, mileage wont change. The ranger is getting 13 to 15 mpg...
the nice thing is, the body isnt too bad. yeah it needs work, but the floors are solid. so are the rockers, and hood... the hood on my 88 250 is rusty, floors gone, fenders are just starting to go on the bottoms.
All body parts are the same as a 250. The way I look at one is, is the body what I want and is it in good enough shape for me to put a new motor or any other major work(and money) If not theh it either gets driven till it breaks and turns into a parts truck or it gets parted. Another way to look at it is it is well worth the price for parts. I am not a fan of aftermarket body parts, they sometimes have to me massaged to even get to fit and are made of thinner inferior materials. They may hold up (maybe) if you drive mostly on smooth roads, but around here there are a lot of dirt road and pasture miles and the stuff cracks in a short period. Oem doors should not be hard to find for that though.
i sourced a rust free box for 500 bucks, so basically i would need fenders and doors eventually, but the doors are not a huge deal since they are not rusting out. I have never really had bad luck with body panels... And i have replaced quite a few, even on a couple road race cars, and they all seamed to hold up just fine and go through a lot of abuse.
