I have an 08 F-150 Super Crew 4X4 with the 5.4 and I was just wondering what some of you guys doing to increase fuel mileage. What is a good air intake and does it increase fuel mileage? Is there any way on these trucks to go to manual locking hubs? Thanks.
Then you have to look at how long it will take to re-coup the cost of the mods. If you drove 320 miles at 16mpg it would cost you $60.00 at $3.00 per gallon. That same 320 miles would cost you $56.46 at 17mpg. You have just saved $3.54. Like Shotgunz says, concervitive driving is the best way to increase milage. One other thing you can do is keep track of your mpg with different brands of gas. There is a difference.
For some reason I have gotten better gas mileage in my truck by being hard on the gas. I tried slow take offs and I would get about 90 miles maybe a little more from Full to 3/4. When Im hard on the gas I can get 100-115 miles from full to 3/4 sometimes. Overall being hard on the gas I usually get 13-14 and occasional 15 but with slow take offs its 12-13. I also have a programmer to and no air intake mods.
The old adage: Drive like you have an egg between your foot and the gas pedal usally applies to most vehicles. The more you can do to maintain your speed rather than accelerate and decelerate also is beneficial. Another thing is to try and keep the engine in the best area of the torque curve, usually around 2000 rpms, you'll get the best mileage. Don't carry around alot of unnecessary dead weight. Thing like oversize tires, tires with very aggressive tread and heavy tires or rims will all help decrease your mileage. Things like gearing changes can be beneficial if it puts your truck into the best torque range for the speed you drive the most. Some trucks will get better mileage on one brand of gasoline vs another. Do the usual maintenance on a regular basis.
Those are pretty much all the things I can think of right now to help maintain or boost your mileage.
I get 17 to 19 mpg carrying 1000lbs in the box with an evolution programer set at level 1 running reg unledded (k&N cold air intake ,vortex trottle plate, gibson dual sport exhaust) highway speed 2000rpm as often as possible 65 mph 8ply tires 55 lbs pressure also had to buy helper springs to maintain truck level modification cost 1700$ cost efficient probably not but I love my truck . programer cost 400$ and with scan tool in programer I fix the truck 2 times i figure i saved 400 in dealer REPAIRS
I agree with Still Smoking, about the same numbers. I tried that speed limit trick that you all speak of, but I kept getting passed and about ran over so that only lasted about 20 miles(surprised it was that long). I added a flowmaster exhaust, s&b intake, and sct programmer and now I get around 13 in town being pretty rough( i like to hear my exhaust) and maybe 15 on the highway. These pickups do not like to be ran at 75+ down the road, the mileage drops.
Get a ScanugageII from Autozone, set it up for your vehicle, and drive by it.I put one in my 07 4.2 automatic LWB.It will help you change the habits, and definately pay for itself in the first couple of weeks if the truck is a DD.
CAI did nothing that could be noticed except the noise under the hood. Read where the Troyer duel eclectric fan gave rather positive results (~1.5-2mpg) by reducing motor drag, which also sends more power through the tranny. I bought one, but have never installed. Duh. Staying too darn busy these days. Need to schedule some vacation time with my F150.
what do you think would happen if you introduce pure oxigen in the air intake would the engine burn gas thurowly thus make it more efecient ? and or would the oxigen sencor compensate and add more gas to make it less eficient.
