Biggest problem with Fram is usually the anti-drainback valve not working properly. All the oil will drain back out of the filter so when you start the vehicle, the filter has to fill back up before oil is pumped through the rest of the engine.

i have seen it a few times.

once she is sludged up like that make plans for a tear down and regasket a rebuild is not always required just dont undo the crank or rods.

im sure every 400 could use a regasket i know mine sure does

I have heard about the Anti-drainback valves also. And apparently they also use glued paper endcaps to hold the pleats together.

I remember when Honda had Honeywell (Fram) start making some of their filters, people went ape. I don't blame them. You can tell which by the model number which was different. So everybody would buy the S2000 filter or figure out which dealers had stock of the other one. This is not to say that Honda didn't oversee the design and manufacture but still...

Probably needs main bearings also. Might as well check crank and order main and rod bearings.
I would be tempted to redo the whole shabang after goin that far. Just depends on your money situation. Never know you may end up with a 434 stroker, lol.

I agree with 79FordBlake about bearings and rebuild. I pulled the valve covers off of my 351m. It looked like coal around the rocker arms. Problem with sludge buildup like that is the oil doesn't drain back properly and the engine starves for oil. That is why I decided to pull the engine and I was glad I did because the bearings were toast. Rods and mains. Would not have been good for hauling a camper and towing a boat on a 100 degree day. At least check all the bearings. Good luck.
