im very new here, and i dont no if this in the right spot.. but i recently got a 1977 f250, it is not road legal yet (it has no bed, no tail lights) but i was wondering if anyone on here has built a flat bed for one or anything like that... i was just curious... it runs drives perfect i just cant register it with out a bed or something there... if any one can help
thanks
Can you just go buy a bed from the junk yard/pull a part? Beds that match the body style are '73-'79 F100, F150, F250, F350 depending on if it's a short or long bed. This is your chance to even go find a step side if that's what you're into. I have a wooden flat bed on my truck (that's how I bought it) It's made out of 4x4's and 2x6's I think. I have since taken a sawzall to it and made it a little better looking. Future plans are to build a metal flat bed that's incorporated into an exo cage. If you still want a flat bed you could just go get some steel and start cutting your own and bolt it down.
He's done it for Chevys before, and he's done the measuring for my truck. Basically, from what I gathered as we were measuring, he's going to have the bed stick out over the back of the bumper by an inch or so, hang out from the tires by about the same or maybe 2 inches, and he's going to build something to protect the rear window.
When he measured, he went from the cab out a little beyond where the bumper mounted to the frame... I think he actually measured the width of the bumper, and added a little on to it... And then from a couple of inches above the frame, to the bottom of the rear window... And from the same spot above the frame to the top of the rear window. That may have been from the frame to the window though, I don't remember for certain now.
Hope this helps. I'm not entirely certain what he has planned exactly, and my memory isn't the best, but this is what I remember measuring.
Kirby, that's what my buddy is doing kind of... He's going to have a metal frame, with wood bed, and bolt it to the truck frame. Around here at least, it's really hard to find boxes that are in decent shape, and the price would be around the same if not cheaper.

Reason: typo
thats basically what im looking for...i mean iv thaought about how im gunna build it just not how big and like how much of an over hang i want...
thanks for the help on that
No problem dude... Glad I could actually lend assistance, and not only receive it!
As for the overhang, I think that'd be a personal opinion type of deal. You could measure from the cab to where the bumper and frame meet, and go that far... Or you could have an overhang there. You could measure the rear bumper's width and go with that, or go a little under or over. It all depends on your taste.
For me, I've got a buddy who's going to do the fab work for me. So I'm letting him call the shots; I'll live with what I get. I'm not an overly picky fella, so it all works in my mind.
yea personal taste it true... i can always look around for a metal frame as well... i was "thinking" about doing it all wood? i dunno how well this would work... i imagine it would work perfectly fine... just pick up some pressure treated wood...
i can always play around with the measurements...
thanks again
For your needs, I'd say an all wood bed would work fine. Me, I'm going to keep the flatbed on the truck until the truck falls apart, or I total it, whichever comes first. Basically, I don't see myself selling the thing, and I'm just going to keep the flatbed on it.
The measurements, you just have to be able to picture in your head what you're looking for. I don't know exactly how my buddy is planning on doing this, so I can't get a clear picture in my mind on how it'll look, but if you can just picture it you'll know what you want.
