Hard to tell from your post if you consider that good or bad.

The worst my 06 CTD has done is around 12 mpg pulling my enclosed car hauler (8000 lbs. and extra tall).

The best has been about 17 mpg pulling an open car hauler (about 5500 lbs.).

I usually pull my 35' two car open hauler (10,000-11,000 lbs.) and get in the 13-14 mpg range.

I hope at 9 mpg, you are pulling a heavy, high trailer.

I get 9 to 10 mpg hand calculated towing a v nose snowmobile trailer just about empty. I use it for carry some furniture and most times its not loaded at all. It's rated for #3500 max including trailer. It's tall. So I believe him when he says he's getting that mpg for sure.

I'm getting about 9 MPG towing a 24' enclosed car hauler 8'6" high that weighs about 5000-5500. I should add that is at 75-80 MPH. If I'm going 60 MPH I'll get about 10.5 MPG.

Chop those DPF's and give them back to the EPA. This is the only real drawback to the 6.4.

Do any of you have the 9-19-09 flash. I have read that it reduces regens and increases mpgs.

Other than going to the Ford dealership is there a way to know what flash you have?

Thing is, at an average of around 9 mpg over those miles (remember, all towing except for maybe 4000 miles) I have purchased 15167 gallons of diesel fuel.

At an average of $2.80/gallon (which is probably low) that's $42467!

I am probably going to get a 6.7 soon. If I get 12 mpg I could save around $10,000 over the course of 3 years (more if fuel goes up again). Who knows though, we will have to see what the 6.7 gets MPG wise.
There's a fuel economy test on the Ford website where it compares the fuel economy of the big 3 diesels. Long story short the 6.7 psd loaded with 1500 lbs in the bed with 2 gallons of diesel in an external tank made 21 mpg.

I would give them a solid year to work out the kinks on the 6.7 . I realy dont care how they test them they can never perfect anything due to the driving nature of so many different people, diffrent regions, diffrent work loads..ect.

On the flip Test standard's should be high cause lets face it they cant afford to scew this up in the market where in now.

My truck lived at the shop for the first 6 months i owned it and its a early Job 1 07 6.4. After owning the truck nearly 3 years id glady do it again but i would wait if i had the option. I made the leap because i had a 99 7.3 with 265,000 miles and the tranny was going out so time was a bad factor for me.

I saw a video on utube of the new truck. When he was filming the interior dash and data center it said 16.9 mpg. The truck had 681 miles on it.

Real world reports coming soon will either make me puke or be relieved about missing out on this one.

Well this about sums it up. Every day I really enjoy the engine/truck. Really, the thing is just great. But when you crunch some numbers the "love" kinda gets tarnished.

The 9mpg is towing in the 6-12K range, 16ft and 20ft enclosed trailers and a 28ft travel trailer and a 36ft fifth wheel enclosed cargo trailer.

If the new motor were to gain more than 2 mpg over the current one it would just change where the money goes. Ford would get it instead of oil companies.

I hope all this helps the OP make his decision.

Any time!

Honestly I think the new 6.7 will be a better engine for our application than the 6.4 is. I say that because the entire purpose of this engine, from the ground up, was to go in trucks up to Class 5, not higher.

Different standards allow them to prioritize what matters more to us, like HP and MPGs, rather than have to compromise to design an engine that would make a great pickup truck engine as well as something to do well in applications as high as class 7 commercial trucks.

Because of that I think the 6.4 is more overbuilt than the 6.7 will be, and that is part of the reason the new engine is lighter than the old one.

Now I can guarantee it's not going to be as tuner friendly as the 6.4 is, simply because the turbo system is only designed to operate as high as 30 PSI instead of the 41 PSI system we have in our 6.4s. This is what allows Matt and the rest of the Spartan guys to coax over 600 HP out of an otherwise stock engine. This isn't an issue for most of us, though.

For my money I'd rather a 6.7 with it's higher MPG figures. I don't need a race truck, just something that tows heavy things and gets reasonable MPGs doing it. Oh well, maybe in a few years!
