Has anyone ever heard of these products? Supposedly use Boron to create a crystaline barrier on engine components. Supposedly better slickness than PTFE due to its submicrometer size structure and interlaced crystalline. They claim that one treatment is all you need for the life of the engine since any H2O vapor inherent in the engine helps to reinforce the crystalline structure so it is constantly renewing itself.
I talked with several people who have used it and the claims I am getting are an average of 20% fuel economy increase.
I picked some up today at the Seattle International Boat show for a song, compared to the regular $30 price. Just not sure if it is what they claim it to be. It is new to the US, and so far has only one distributor................
Mercedes also does not recommend any oil, or fuel additives
in their gasoline, or diesel engines...I found this out when
inquiring about using a diesel fuel additive to lubricate
the injector pump, because of lower sulfur content in diesel
fuel. Mercedes response was NO, they went on to say that
the design of the injector pump in Mercedes diesels do not
rely on the fuel to lubricate them...
Okay, I can see where the conversion to boric oxide will arrest corrosion. Similiar to how a rust converter like Conquest works to convert active red rust to an inhert black oxide.
But who has a rusty engine in the first place? I mean I have a 50 year old farm tractor that has been sitting outdoors all it's life. Everything inside the engine is clean and shiney. (I inspected it with a boroscope, but that's another story.)
Perhaps for marine gearboxes that get contamination from seawater, this may have some merrit. But for automotive engines, I just can't see the use. I don't believe there is any auto mfgr that will recommend the use of any type of motor oil additives.
Besides that, you are NEVER going to convince me to put Boric Acid into my engine!
I wouldn't be so quick to throw out Motor Silk as "Snake Oil" just yet. Supposedly Boron can reduce wear by up to 90% and Volvo is running a 1,000,000 test with a Boron based additive. Only one treatment is required to last over 100,000 miles according to what I've read. Maybe it's a breakthrough, and only time will tell. I'm pretty sure that car companies wouldn't be excited about their engines lasting 1,000,000 miles so it would be unlikely to get their approval
I would be willing to run it in a vehicle as an experiement, but I'm not crazy about shelling out $30 for it.
I paid much less than $30 for both the engine and tranny treatments. Only time will tell whether it works or not. I will let you know what I find out, since it is already in the vehicle. If I can get my vacuum/timing/crab problem figured out now, I would be a happy man!
The long and the short of it is that our premium motor oils are so good now that there is just no need and possibly harm to come from additional components.
The additive package in most any modern premium motor oil is a careful balance and the addition of such stuff is not only unnecessary, but may upset the balance of the additive package which could cause more harm than good.
If you will change oil and filter frequently that is just all you need in the oil department to allow for long engine life.
