OK I feel like a idiot, How do I pull the codes on a 1990 bronco, 5.8???
It has been running fine then about 10 minutes ago I pulled onto my street coming home and it just shut off, no chug miss or anything just quit and wont start back up.
ok, went and bought a code reader, no codes of any kind, no flashes at all, also I traces the problem to no spark. I have good power to the coil, but the neg post pulsates when cranking?? I swapped in a known good coil and still nothing, could it be the control module on the dist ? or is there a fuse I am missing ?
Are you getting power up to the coil? Are you getting power to pin 1 of the PCM? No codes indicates no power to the computer. Your 1990 has a fusible link (marked fusible link "N") with a yellow wire that feeds the PCM, the EEC power relay, the ICM (ignition module), the coil and the distributor. A check for power on the load side (away from the battery) of the link would be in order here. Even if there are no fault codes the PCM should still throw code 11 or code 111 if it is getting power.
Ah, ok... so no start, sudden stall, and no fault codes... hmmm. Next step would be the ICM on the dizzy. Before you assume that it is the culprit try removing the SPOUT connector. This takes the ICM out of the equation and forces the PCM to trigger using the base timing only. If the truck starts, the module is suspect... if it does not the issue is more likely further up the line. Keep in mind however, that if the truck has cooled off, the engine may start or try to but not run well with the SPOUT connector removed as the computer cannot control spark timing for a cold engine this way.
It was funny I have had the bronco almost a year with zero problems, been hunting and wheeling and always ran fine, then just shut off, no warning nothing.
Still nothing... hmmm, yes, the SPOUT is the little grey shunt about 6-8" from the module typically. You might try replacing the module. The problem almost has to be electronic for it to have given no warning. I am assuming it will crank but not turn over correct?
yes, cranks good and strong. I picked up a new control module as well as cap and rotor, but with the easter weekend we have family here from out of town so I will have to wait to install everything ,
One more quick question, what size screws hold the ICM on the dist ? if they are really small I will need to run by work to pick up some tools
