Cleaning engine bay

Well, lately i've been trying to clean up the engine bay good, and try and make sure their isn't any leaks or anything.

(was awfully hard to tell with a 1/2'' of oily grime and what not caked on in areas.)

Also i've been trying to get rid of all the peices of emissions stuff off of it so i can work on the truck easier. I'm in the middle of removing my power steering pump so i can take off the old a/c unit bracket thats to the right of the engine. An now im cleaning all those areas and crevesses.

I was hoping someone could chime in and tell me what this part is and what it does?? I see that a fuel line is running to it from the carb?

Also is the water pump is the thing right infront of my fan in the front correct?

The part in your 1st pic is the fuel pump. It pumps the fuel from the gas tanks into the carb. Before you do anything else take your truck to the closest car was and power wash the engine just be carefull not to get any water into the engine via the carb. If you have fuel injection then dont worry and power wash away.

Yup, another great thing about the carbed 300, takes about 10 minutes to change out the fuel pump.

Sounds like you have the same truck as me. 1981 F100, 302, C6. Yes, changing the fuel pump is very easy. It just took me a little longer because I wanted a little more room to work with, so I moved the power steering pump out of the way.

the evidence that is your waterpump is the large hose coming from it to the radiator

Thanks ya'll . Yea, two bolts and the fuel pump would pop right off i see. Very easy fix .

Yea, i just used some good ol engine degreaser and some carb&choke cleaner and got it as good as i could. Looks much better than it did so im happy. But hopefully its not leaking oil anywhere!

Thanks again.

Just be careful, try to stay away from ignition components, module, coil, distributor. I accidentally pressure washed the coil wire right off recently. I felt so dumb and almost flooded the engine.

A hot water pressure washer does wonders! I had a small hole in my oil pan and had oil all over the bottom side of the truck. Tranny, gas tank, drive shafts, rear end, motor. Hot water eats that oil and crud off like nothing. Never new I had a shiny tranny and transfer case and a brand new gas tank! Mad it much better to crawl under and work on and not come out all oily!

When I first got my truck I could touch any part of the engine and have a black hand guaranteed. After a few gaskets and alot of cleaning and scraping,I can work on it and only have gray hands.
