oil pressure problems

Just bought a 1988 Ford F150 with the straight 6 and 4 speed. Truck started up great when i was at the guys house. Got on the freeway and drove for about 40 min home and truck was still running fine. stopped at a light and started to idle a lil rough. NO NOISES AT ALL THOUGH. oil pressure gauge said there was low to no pressure. if you huit the gas a bit pressure returns to the normal range again. ended up drivin home but had to keep revving the engine when stopped so it didnt die. HELP WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM? thanks and god bless

Welcome to FTE!

If something is causing your engine to drop below 550 rpms then the oil pump will not create enough pressure and you will get a low oil pressure reading. The question is, assuming your oil/filter has been changed on schedule is what is causing your engine to falter in the first place.

I used to have a 87 with the 300/auto and whenever I stopped at a light or stop sign it would try to die then return to normal idle. I never did investigate why though. I'm someone here might know.

I have the same problem with my 1990 F250 351 Windsor, try putting on a mechanical gauge to verify that it is indeed got low pressure. My truck is in the shop, oi pump is possible and it could also be your camshaft bearings having too much clearance from wear. How many miles on the odometer?

I am having the same issue but it happens after the engine warm-up, and not only that, but also the oli is getting into the coolant and the coolant in getting into the engine oil. So I am going to chage the oil filter housing and its gasket there are no leaks so I think that, the oil filter housing is cracked. I will post back with the results.

If that doesnt solve your problem, then you have a blown head gasket.

You quoted the original post from 16 years ago so you also have a 300/ 4.9L? I’m not familiar with any oil filter housing on that engine. Sounds like the head gasket is bad.
