Sense it was such a nice day yesterday I decided to crawl under my 04 and see if there was anything to fix after that incredible long winter.(just kidding on the long winter thing) I did notice that there was diff fluid on the rim, so I'm guessing axle seal. I was wondering what was all involved in changing the seal. I've changed the seals on my 79 mustang, is there much difference between the two. "take cover off, remove c-clips, pull axles out, change seals, reinstall, is that about right, or is there something hidden. IE some special tools needed.
I experienced the same issue, the local Ford dealership replaced it twice (first time I had to pay, think it was around $100). The third time, the inner & outer pinion bearings were replaced. They had to open up the "pumpkin" to do this. I worked a price out with the Service Manager as the intial quote was $1,200 for the "overhaul", they also put me in a loaner for the night.
Hopefully it's just the seal that needs to be replaced....Good Luck!
Yeep, did mine last year when I bought my truck. It is also a good time to replace, or at least check your rear brakes since you have to take them apart to take the axle off. Also be sure to inspect your E brake shoes and replace if they are starting to rust apart.
