When I'm working under a vehicle supported with stands and wheels off, I always take the tire and wheel and place under the vehicle because chit happens. You can never be too safe.
Do you have a Tractor Supply nearby? I just got a Torin 3.5 ton jack and set of 3 ton jack stands. The jack was on sale for $99 and I thing the stands were $29. Napa had a 3.5 ton jack/stands on sale for $299, the tractor supply route was much cheaper.
whoa housedad, some story there - scary moment I am sure. It seemed like a silly question to post up, but since I have been on this forum, I have appreciated the experience out there and the advice from all of you. I will do my homework and lean on the "overbuilt" side of things. Even when I used to work on the bug, I blocked the wheels and did the tire backup as a second fix. Never had one fail on me, but it sure made it feel safer when under the car trying to free rusted up bolts...
I got the heavy duty ones at Wal-Mart. 3 ton I think. I used them to change the front brakes and rotors. No problems. I did also use the jack on the side I was doing at the time just for back up.
You can go bigger if you feel safer. My theory was the jack and the jack stand were enough.
So, I bought the 4 ton heavy duty set at sears this morning. 29.99 for the pair and I did the rewards card thing and got another ten bucks off. Pretty good deal if anyone is looking for new jacks. They are 4 ton for the set, so 2 ton each jack, but since I will be using these primarily for brakes, wheel off work I think they should be sufficient for the task. I did not see a set with a jack, but I think I will wait on that purchase for when I really need it. Thanks again for all the opinions and advice on this topic.
It was a bad one to happen, that's for sure. The first Terminator movie had just come out and you remember the robot gets crushed by a press at the end? My buds called me Terminator for a couple of years after that until a propane bottle exploded next to me one day. I'e been 'Torch" to them ever since. But that is another story...

When that jack slipped (former post), my buddy was mostly under his lowered 64' Chevy looking at his muffler so he got squished a little bit and yelled; maama! My other buddy and I panicked and tried to lift the car up by the fender well to no avail, so I placed the jack in a better spot and raised it back up while the 3rd party pulled him out. He was OK but I know he will never forget it. I was a backyard mechanic for 10 years and it scares me to think about all the times I put the pin above the tube on the tube type stands instead of in the top hole to gain a little more height.
It was one of many "nine lives" stories in my life. I never wrote them down, and this thread got me to thinking about it. I wrote a short synopsis of some of the crazy stuff in my life just now in General non automotive forum. It felt good to write some of it down.
The more I read about you the luckier I feel. I went through many fast cars and bikes, 20 years of construction etc and never got hurt. Either you were accident prone or I was just lucky. ( I did have to have a valve replaced to a metal one in my heart).
When I was in my mid 20's, I had a 74 Chevy Impala on four of the (add expletive) pin jacks.
I was alone under the car (tires off) on a creeper trying to remove the trans, and was working on the bell housing bolts.
11 broken ribs and a punctured lung. And I consider myself lucky that that is all I got.
It is worth the money to buy good ones!!
Well ???? did ya finish the job? lol Spine chilling, glad you are ok.
Jack and stands. always a back up. better then the time the jack slipped and my head was stuck in the wheel well of my old F-150 between the tire and the bed for half hour cause i felt too stupid to call for help. finally able to wiggle out, looked around to see if anyone saw me and acted like i meant that to happen.
