Down Shifting Question

My 53' F-100 has a 3 on tree standard transmission. I can't downshift into first while the truck is moving.

Is that normal or what's up?

Thanks.

No synchro like on modern transmissions on first gear. Must be fully stopped before shifting into first, also trying go from 2nd to 1st if your still getting grinding when stopped.

Yep, that's normal. But the good news is if you ever get a ticket for rolling through a stop sign, you can beat it by telling the judge it's impossible to get it into a forward gear without coming to a complete stop.

I did that once.

In theory you can downshift into 1st using the long lost art of 'double clutching'

Even double clutching down to first is pretty tough. I was never able to do it.

As my brother in law, who hauls lumber in Oregon, comments after a noisy double-clutch downshift, 'just counting the gears"

Down shifting into a lower gear, at least on the crashbox tranny, isn't all that hard once you've figured it out. In my F-2 when I come to a corner and need to down shift I push the clutch pedal in, hold it in and goose the accellerator a little, pump the clutch and then down shift. It takes pratice but it's not all that hard. I also have a F-1 panel and don't remember having the downshifting problem. I'll have to take it down the road tonight and see what happens.

My other automotive vises are Crosleys, they have no synchros in any gears. I need to retrain every spring but I can go up and down with minimal grinding on 90% of my shifts once I get back into practice. Years ago when I drove them more it was closer to 99%. I haven't tried going in to 1st on my F1 yet, I have only put about 70 miles on it since I got it. Mostly in the last few days. I find the flathead V8 has enough torque that I don't seem to need to go in to 1st accept when I'm stopped. As I drive more I'm sure I will give it a try.

The conventional method going down, is to pull in to neutral let the clutch out goose the engine up to about the speed it would be turning in the lower gear, push the clutch in and gently push it into the lower gear. When your good you don't need the clutch accept to get started from a stop.

Years ago I lost the clutch linkage on a Crosley following the owner of the Crosley I was driving through his home town. I managed to drive it all the way back to his house without the clutch, needed to coast through a few stop signs. Owner was amazed when he asked when it happened and I told him on the other side of town.
