the stock 5.0 truck intake is a pretty good intake. several aftermarket intakes use the stock truck lower which is diff than on the cars such as a mustang. i would just look for an aftermarket upper that uses truck lower if you are dead set on a new intake. i wouldnt mess with it myself if i was you.
What would you do to increase mileage? cold air intake, turbo?.
Ah.. no. If you want milage build the motor to produce as much low rpm TQ as possible, and on a 302 that means your head and cam selsection is all wrong.
I have a 1995 F-150 4X4 that I have built with the following:
K&N cold air intake, Permacool Cool pack electric fans, Ford Racing E303 cam w/4* advance, Ford Racing S/S headers, all stainless dual exhaust, Edelbrock 5.0 Truck Performer intake manifold, Accel U-Groove plugs, 9000 series wires and ignition module. All ordered from summit Racing.
You asked about gas milage...I currently get about 8-10 MPG... as long as I stay out of the throttle.
WOW.. that's terrible... sorry. What is the rest of the combo... trans, axle gearing, tire size?
4R70W Trans, 31X10.5 Tires and I'm Guessing whatever the factory gearing is...and I DO have a lead foot and it's not a "Daily Driver".
I'm still tinkering with the timing and throttle, oh, I also have a March model 1000 5.0 underdrive pulley kit I had to put a bushing under the Alternator pulley. The changes I've made have moved my power band up by about 500-1000 RPMs (I'm guessing, I have no access to a dyno). It's not real fast off the line but will put you back in the seats when it hits second gear.
Producing efficient combustion by conditioning the combustion chamber surfaces and correct spark plug heat range will improve fuel mileage. The stronger and more consistant your flame travel is, the more power you will make. A more free flowing intake filter will be a start for a cooler air charge.
What is the maximum rpm you will be seeing with this engine? You could get by with a 2V carburetor too.
the 302 should have never never ever been put in a truck. Just about anything to improve power raises the powerband and loses low rpm torque and 302 seriously lack torque with only 3 inches of stroke. I do like the afr 165 heads but its not going to be an ideal combo.
