Tank interchange?

Need to know if a tank from a '79 will fit for Old Rusty's leaking front tank. Not much info. on the '79. Description was " A side tank from a '79 ". Old Rusty's in my signature. Price is right IF it'll fit.

I know that's not much info. Do have pictures & measurements if that will help.

ahhh... the old 258 I6... My first car was a AMC concord with a 258 and followed by my grandpa's AMC scrambler with a 258... Memories...

But on to the fuel tanks. Your 79 was a carb and guessing that your stock in the 91 making it EFI. That means you will have to try and find a high pressure fuel pump to run in the 79 tank (maybe the one you have could work???) but tank depth and fitting to the opening on the 79 tank probably an issue. Carbs take lower fuel pressure to their bowl/float so you have to use a high pressure pump. I mean you could make it work... But even if you get it all riged up you would probably just be better off to spend the $100 on a new tank. RockAuto Auto Parts $65-$95 for the tank plus shipping and it will be a direct replacement! Just make sure to get a can of rubberized undercoating to cover the tank so the rust won't be an issue again.

Thanks for the reply. Have another guy who said he can get one from a '90s cheap. Will wait for that. Didn't even think about the carb. vs. fuel injection thing.

some of those side tanks changed sizes depending on what year 90's you pull. just make sure you get the mounting hardware with it! It will make installation a lot easier.

I'll let him know. He's going to be gone for about a month or so. Am hoping to get some measurements on mine this weekend.

oh I noticed you are in the rust belt with me so... if you get the other tank and there is any rust use some of this...
Rust Reformer - BIC Warehouse

and then coat with a rubberized undercoating over the top. Stops the rusty tank issue from happening again.

Stuff sounds interesting. Never knew the name of it. I've heard of it before. Excellent idea.

yeah me and grandpa put it on his old AMC scrambler (predicessor to the jeep wrangler)... worked like a charm and rust didn't move after applying it. any liquid rust converter will work before you seal it with rubberized undercoat just don't get the aerosol cans... they don't work nearly as well as the liquid brush on...

Now I know what you're talking about. I was thinking of the Hurst SC/Rambler ( 2 door Rambler American w/ 390 4 Bbl. ). You're talking about the Jeep, now I get it. Takes me a while, especially in the morning.

Yeah, okay. Those were cute little pickups. If this works, here's pictures of what I was thinking of at first ( or Google AMC Hurst SC/Rambler if this FAILs ).

yeah well my neighbor to the north has one of these...1981 pacer

My buddy has a restored one of these in blue in his garage...70's amc rebel

and my first car was a 1980 amc concord like this one. mine was red with black top. red/black not an origional option but looked way less 80's with that color scheme (repainted and toped myself in highschool)...

Rebel Machine, another AMC that did it's job. As for the Spacers, that's one body style that never caught on with me. Upside down Martian fish bowl is one way I've heard them described. Concord was the replacement for the Hornet if I remember right. People put AMC down or at best remember the AMX / Javelin. Rambler made some cool stuff. Think it's a shame Mopar killed them after taking the Jeep. I've got an older brother who's a used car dealer back in Pa. At one time he owned a Hurst SC/Rambler. I remember he took the blue stripes off the hood. Later he had a Rebel Machine, dark blue with the flat black hood. I wanted that so bad. Actually sent him some money ( fresh out of high school & just joined the Army ) to hold it for me. Too late, when I got back home from basic training, he'd already sold it. 340 H.P. 390 C.I 4 Bbl. Hurst shifted 4 speed Ram Air w/ tach built in on the back of the scoop. Just what I needed, probably would have killed myself if I'd have gotten it. Every high school kid's dream, owning something like that.

yeah i think people bag on AMC to much... you want to talk about a crying shame... I had a chance at a 1970 AMX all origional with the 390ci engine 325HP! Owner bought it new and had engine problems in 1981 and put in barn until 1999. But it was $900 I didn't have and it was in need of body. It was a straight, 1 owner car, perfect interior with 65K origional miles but the engine needed some TLC too! I kick myself every time some one brings up the AMX b/c that is "the one that got away." I almost cry when i think about how many good times I could have had by now rolling around in that classic... i've kept an extra $1000 in hiding for the day that i find another one of those "car in the barn" kinda deals like that one was...
