Leaking E4OD - Common places to check?

The E4OD in my '96 Bronco is leaking at least a quart every 500 miles. I'm sure it's coming from somewhere higher than the pan but I'm not exactly sure where. It shifts great for having 200k and I'd like to not have to pull it if I can help it. It's getting a steady diet of pennzoil MercV now but I just bought it last fall and don't know what the PO was doing for it. I did a pan drop and filter change and I think the fresh fluid opened up a false seal. It doesn't drip when sitting. It only leaks when it is running.

Are there places that are known to leak? What should I do to track down the source?

Consider a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix. It's fixed many problems I've had with several Ford transmissions. If you have not used it, it is very thick fluid and sticks to old seals. It doesn't pour, it sort of plops out as you squeeze the bottle. Great stuff.

Leaking out the front pump seal?

If so its a fairly good sign a E4OD is getting to hot, leaks when hot, doesn't when trans has cold or cooled down.

If getting caught in heavy stop and go traffic is enough to cause it to leak, dribble steady and or literally pump the fluid right out of the front seal but the steady air flow from a run down the road a few miles is enough to stop it, then look to replacing the clutch on the cooling fan.

As well as making sure the trans cooler is in good shape, and is not clogged up with debris, flatted over fins and or mud and leaves all jammed in it or what have ya.

Check the cooler lines, make sure they haven't been crushed or kinked and severely limiting or even preventing the fluid from circulating.

Proper cooling system also requires the full fan shroud be in place, if its gone replace it.

And don't be fooled by the motors running at a normal temp that the trans won't/can't overheat, it can and will.
A dead fan clutch can and will spin the fan just enough to cool the motor but at the same time leave the trans to overheat.

I'm positive it isn't overheating since I'm getting readings off the scangauge that are 150F and lower. Also the fluid at the dipstick isn't blazing hot or getting burnt. That said where's the seal you are talking about; where would fluid be at if that is what is leaking?

Okay, well that explains that. If that was where the leak was wouldn't I see it at the bottom of the bellhousing? I'm seeing the fluid end up down the sides of the pan on the rearward half and on the tailshaft.

this end ... somewhere

there's something what would be the top at the base of the bellhousing that looks like a bolt head (rust colored ) - what's that for?

The gasket can leak where the tail housing bolts onto the transmission. Check for loose bolts there or replace the gasket.
