Yesterday I met with a guy who has 460 in his 75 F150 4x4 shortbox and boy was this motor rocking. I was going to do a 390 but I was converted last night to 460 power. I bought the engine which has low miles... He is stepping up to a stroked 460 that was also just like wow!!!! Once I heard his truck run I was like that is what I want. CA emissions is what it is and I will just deal with it.... I found a 74 truck for $500.00 and think I will buy and never worry about smog again....
This is not an uncommon story. Most believers are only believers after they have done the exact same thing you have.
For the most part guys want their smaller displacement engines to be as capable as the larger ones, but as you have noticed, the displacement makes a huge difference.
You wont be sorry.
Now, if you think that is fun, wait till you step up to something over 500 cubic inches.
Welcome to the 385 series.
Dont get me wrong, I think I would build a large displacement FE, probably larger than the 390, but it is hard to beat the power of the 460.
Dollar for dollar, its hard to beat.
The funny thing about that is my 429 and 460's gave me almost the same milage as my 300, 302 and my 351's. But with the 429 and 460's I have all the power I want and the fuel milage stays the same empty or full, something the small blocks will never be able to do.
I see that you're on the Central Coast (CA). If you need a core or builder 385 series engine, check out the Pick N Pulls in the central valley like Modesto and Stockton. A couple of months ago I saw at least 8 big blocks. In fact, I got the "Trailer Special" emblems off a F250 with a 460.
Lastly, Horsepower on Spike TV built a budget 460 and came up with, as I recall, nearly 500 HP. Check out their archives or e-magazine for a write up.
This is what I have bought for a total less than 1K this week. 74 F250 with 390 4 barrel engine... a 390 2v engine. I am suppose to purchase the 460 next weekend so I have time to ponder. I plan take the 74 apart as my base truck and slide the 76 4x4 frame under it!! Just using the cab off the 74...
i have a 390 and really like it but i talked to some one who had the 460 in just about the same truck as mine and he didnt get much worse gas milage as me. Both great engines for sure
I used my 460 powered F350 to pull a 16 foot wash trailer(heavy comercial unit) all over the south. Never had a truck pull as good. milage sucked but talk about pulling torque!!!
5MPG Buck, that is harsh, good thing it a toy and not a daily driver now. Keeping in mind that mymilage is in Canadain gallons, the worst I've done for fuel milage is 14 with the 460 and could squeek 15 out of the 429, the same milage I got with a couple 351M boat anchors. Even my 302 never did better than 16. The truck I have now with the 460 came from the originla owner who tracked his milage since new and the best I seen was 10 MPG running on propane. It had a square bore Holly on it from ford and I replaced it with the spread bore and use the Ford Autolite carb froma 77 460 and shot up 4 MPG's but I did lose some power.
Sorry for highjacking the thread, we got off topic a bit . In my opinion, if you can afford the money to swap to the 460 than go for it. I personally wouldn't waste the time to fix a 351M/ or a 400 if I had the option to toss in a 460, they are night and day apart and in time you can really build the 460 into something. My 429 was bored , balanced and had some mild head work with the factory intake and it was the most fun I ever had with a vehicle. JMO, good luck whatever way you go.
