I almost have 1k on my built 460, damn she'll cook! About 500 horse with Edlebrock aluminum heads, Comp Cam components, 770 holley. My trucks runnin 35" tires with the stock Dana 61 rear, filled with 3.07 gears, and she'll still roast 'em.
I see that you're on the Central Coast (CA). If you need a core or builder 385 series engine, check out the Pick N Pulls in the central valley like Modesto and Stockton. A couple of months ago I saw at least 8 big blocks. In fact, I got the "Trailer Special" emblems off a F250 with a 460.
Lastly, Horsepower on Spike TV built a budget 460 and came up with, as I recall, nearly 500 HP. Check out their archives or e-magazine for a write up.
it was a lot nearer to 600 as i recall... the chebby out muscled the 460 by 11 hp. but the 460 made over 20 some more tq. or maybe we are thinkin different builds?

Even my 302 never did better than 16. The truck I have now with the 460 came from the originla owner who tracked his milage since new and the best I seen was 10 MPG running on propane. It had a square bore Holly on it from ford and I replaced it with the spread bore and use the Ford Autolite carb froma 77 460 and shot up 4 MPG's but I did lose some power.
Sorry for highjacking the thread, we got off topic a bit . In my opinion, if you can afford the money to swap to the 460 than go for it. I personally wouldn't waste the time to fix a 351M/ or a 400 if I had the option to toss in a 460, they are night and day apart and in time you can really build the 460 into something. My 429 was bored , balanced and had some mild head work with the factory intake and it was the most fun I ever had with a vehicle. JMO, good luck whatever way you go.
i really should change my name to 400/3... when will they learn??
