My 04 doesnt seem to have any power. I have had it serviced...replaced the filter with a cold air intake system, but the truck just doesnt have any power. When i floor it, the truck revs up but barely goes or goes slowly...the transmission is not slipping i am pretty sure. I would figure a 5.4 v8 should throw u a little back when u floor it, but it just doesnt happen. I have a 98 4 cyl van that takes off better.
Descriptive info:
04 v8 5.4 L
about 85k miles
no wrecks..no major mechanical probs
has a spectre cold air intake system installed.
Thanks for any help...let me know if u need any more info.
Have you checked your catalytic converter? It sounds to me like a plugged up cat. If not that and you have no CEL, then i would take a look at stuck caliper in the brake system or possibly the transmission.
measure the 0-60mph for us.
if its slower than 11 seconds you may have a problem
if not its the same problem my truck has. just not enough *****! get use to going slow. your in a truck you dont need to go any faster than it will push you stock.
if you want more get a s-10 or a ranger with a small block conversion.
I havent had a chance to check the 0-60, but i would guess its about 10 sec. I mean it will go, but I expect a 5.4 v8 to push you into the seat a little if not a lot. my truck does not throw you back any at all when u floor it. does any of you guys' trucks throw you back when u floor it?
And what should i do to check the cat? take it to a mechanic or is there something simple i can do?
I am also about to have the plugs changed this month before 90k and am thinking about ordering a performance booster like the one found here: Edge Evolution 04-08 F150 Evo 2 Tuner W Pod Gas 15050 - $399.20
It is an Edge Evolution Performance Programmer. But am not sure
OK, i just got back from driving it...my 0-60 was between 12.02 and 12.89. I hit the gas and then hit the stop watch and stopped it when it hit 60....any more suggestions?
again i am going to get the plugs changed and the fuel filter changed...would that make my truck so powerless?
Be careful of a cold air intake on a 5,4. Sometimes it leans out the fuel air ratio too much. A plugged converter will glow red and there will be very little flow out the tailpipe. Change the fuel filter.
A crude method to check for a plug cat would be to disconnect the y pipe at the exhaust manifolds, then test drive. If more get up and go is present, then cats are plugged. Technical method would be to hook up and exhaust gas backpressure gauge and measure the pressure reading. With a cold air intake, I would look at the MAF sensor and all the intake clamps. A bad MAF sensor or air leak in the intake pipe would cause it to lean out.
I'd take it to the shop, or buy a data recorder,,hook it to the computer and take it for a test drive.
It will show the transmission shift points,,o2 , injector ,sparkplug,.rpm in real time.
I've noticed a one second delay in my 04 compared to my 98, 4.6 before it gets full power for acceleration. I don't know if the 5.4 does this too.
Has anyone had any trans problems with the 04 or close truck yet? I am not ruling that out yet...but would like to know some of the symptoms this truck does if it is going out.
I am definately gonna look into the cat this week, but wanted to hear about the trans too...the truck just revs up a lot....like my normal running rpms r 2-2.5k, and when i floor it, it goes up to 5-6k....but the truck just slowly goes up....runs very sluggish. I am also gonna change the fuel filter today bc i know it needs it.
And about the cat...I looked under the truck and there are two pipes coming out of the engine that merge before the muffler...i dont see the cat between the merge and the muffler...so either there are two cats-one on each line or it is part of the muffler. Anyone have any pics of the cat or know where some are online?
manifolds come down into a Y-pipe. where the first o2 sensor is.
then as you go back there should be a cat. then another o2 sensor.
then should be a 2nd cat then the muffler.
but this is on the stock system.
do like someone before said unhook the exhaust from the manifolds. that'll tell tell ya real quick if its the cats. itll be loud but if your truck runs better than its from the manifolds back which is likely one of the cats have collapsed.
Ok, the exhaust system is like this...on each side of the truck a cat assembly comes down from the manifold (it is two large sections on the exhaust pipe on each side of the truck) ....about mid truck the driver side goes across the truck to join the passenger side and then continues in one pipe to the muffler.
So back to the front: each side comes down from the manifold and has a wire going into the pipe before the cats on each side...im assuming it is some kind of O2 sensor...then after the two large sections (which i assume are either both cats or one is and i dont know what the other is) is another wire going into the exhaust pipe...which i assume is another O2 sensor.
So it appears there are four cats?!?! Two on each side of the truck? There is no y pipe to unhook before the cat bc there are two cats...one on each side coming directly from the engine. Any thoughts?
