i was in the bone yard today getting a replacement metal brake line and started looking at the bed and doors on trucks around 91 or so and started wondering. are the beds and doors the same but the grille and headlight area the only change?

87-91 Doors are basically the same, they have a smaller window and wider vent window support, but they bolt right up.The bed will bolt right up,but the fender flares and tailgate are different. The same goes for 92-96 Doors and Beds.
thats what i was hopin to hear. pop-n-law gave me and my wife a decent running LWB 85 lariat and being the bed and fenders were cancerd out he found another LWB just to replace the bed. my truck is red and white, the replacement parts are blue/blue and that drives me nutz.
being the beds up to 91 or so will swap this widens my chances of finding a closer matching bed and such.
what about door panels? will they swap as well and meet at the dash nice enough?
I was considering getting the later model door panels for my '81, but when I made a topic here, several members said that the later panels will indeed fit, but they said that it would look kinda funny (that's subject to personal taste though). You would need to move the armrest support so the mounting hole in it would line up with the newer panel (the mounting screw hole is farther forward on the later panels, I think).
They also suggested I stay with the 80-86 style. From what they said (and I'm starting to find this out myself), the 80-86 panels are actually nicer, and fancier, if you will. I found two sets of maroon, almost fully-carpeted door panels of that vintage at the junkyard here, and they're quite nice with their chrome trim and self-closing map pockets in the lower doors (they have little strips of elastic to pull the pockets shut). There were other versions, some with woodgrain-look inserts, and power locks and windows were options too.

glad ya told me about the mounts. as for appearance, on my 89 formula 5 speed i dropped in a 93-97 stick console. even tho it came from a more updated car it worked very well with the interior. i agree its a personal taste there.
now if i could find a "genie cross your arms and blink and its done" fix for my cab corners the rest is cake.
Actually,to make ya happier, you can use a bed up to 1996.1987-1996 all had the same bed.You can also use doors from a 92-96.Bascially,87-96 trucks are the same from the front of the cab back. The only big noticeable difference is the dash.As for Door Panels,KirbyMan has it spot on,they'll all fit,but the supports are different, and the fronts won't line up with the dash since the dash sticks out further on the newer trucks.Get door panels from an 80-86 and you won't have any problems.
the door panels are kind of a "hmm, this fits, what about this then" kinda thing. i realize i didnt mention mine is a 85. LMC sells panels and i may eventually get a set of those and dye em unless i come across a nice set in the yards (slim chance).
luckily for me when i find a close enough or matching bed the big 3 yards around here are CHEAP. if i had the cash the day i seen a correct colored truck i could have walked away (actually trailerd) with the bed, fenders, and doors for about $300.
Are you kidding??? Where the H do you live. You can barely even buy a tailgate for $300 around here...
Start sending parts my way, we'll both make money.
yeah, iv read on my other forums (camaros, firebirds, s-10"s) that folks have a hard time at yards finding parts and they take a price beating. the other day i found my correct fuel filter housing, the dr side metal brake line and outer brake line all for $6. they wanted $13 for a excellent headliner. i can recover my own like i did in my formula but i couldnt touch the material for $13.
on 91-92 birds the ground f/x are highly sought after and bring good cash, they want $1-3 per foot and i can sell that same piece for nearly $75+ shipping so i feel lucky to have the yards i have around me.
im about 15 mins outside of Memphis. ya get the itch bring a trailer and we can hit the salvage yard world tour as i like to call it round here.
when my son gets some free time on a weekend thats something were gonna do. get up around 5 and load up on coffee and be at the first yard at 7. the 3 big yards here are open n sun so we can hit those then. hit all the others on sat.
thanx for the replies guys, made things a lot easier for me.
Diesel Brad:
Sweet Truck. You talking the groove around the wheel well when u say lower body groove? The groove closer to top of the bed looks the same to me.
i see the differences. one diif franklin made was the fender opening is flat on my truck (85) and on newer beds its more rounded.
another diff i see is the body groove Brad mentions. instead of it going over the rear fender opening like mine does on my 85 bed, it goes stright when it hits the fender opening. even though its diff from the early design it still looks good and flows un noticable to most other folks.
