my built 400

it cost me $2,500.00 in machine work(block/crank/rods/heads) and parts back in 1997. this 400 pulls' just a good a my 1979 F150 S/C 460 HAD and my 1995 F250 S/C EFI 460 does.

this is my 400 built by me back in 1997. BEFORE I installed it in my 1978 F350 dump truck, last year. I had it in a 4500 lbs car with C-6 2000 rpm stall and 2.75 traction lock 9 in rear and it would smoke the tires all day long in that car.
here what I did-
long block;
.030 over bore with block plate installed. honed for molly rings . standard rods/crank 0.010M & 0.010R / 9.0 to 1 cast piston. early non-retarded 351C TIMING SET. 1972 351 BOSS/HO spec cam. used the fully grooved main bearing set. balance &blue printed
heads;
the only good 2V heads for 351C,351M/400 where made from 1970 to 1974! any 351M OR 400 head that are made after 1974 have the exhaust bowl raised up around the guide, which cut flow in the exhaust. I had the both sets flow test proven . I used 1970 351C 2V heads. I put 2.050 intake and 1.715 exhaust valve's with 3 angle valve job and harden seats, then I ported the complete exhaust port's and smooth as a baby butt. the intake, I only ported the pocket to get a smooth transition from the valve seat to the pocket opening. I ALSO polished the combustion chamber as smooth as the exhaust port where.

intake;
is a port matched weiand intake, with 600 cfm EDELBROCK carb

exhaust ;
is port match 351C cast iron manifold to dual 2 1/2 pipe out the back.

Well I did my Holley intake and Carter AFB carb on saturday. It made more of a difference in off idle performance and cruising. Still is really sluggish up between 2500 and 3000 rpm. so I think the timing set will wake that up.

In all honesty if I had purchased these parts new I would be really dissapointed, but I am holding out for the timing set I have high hopes for this.

All of this work just to replace this engine with a 400 that I have sitting on my engine stand being "built"

My 400's getting a wakeup now....

Well, my 400 has a 650 Holley and 4bbl intake already. I t pulled hard n strong....but the cam was stuffed, and with standard retarded timing too. The cam was also stuffed, hardly opening the valves, so I am getting a new cam and timing set in it next Monday. It will be interesting to see how it goes after that. It also has a K&N filter, if that helps it.....now, to really rock the boat some....I have a set of closed chamber Aussie made 302C heads to go on it, to boost compression......
