I have a 1977 F250 2wd, with stock 460/C6. I've got nice 390 with NP435 that I want to swap in... I ordered a new clutch kit & flywheel, I got the engine perches from the same 76 donor that had the 390, but I forgot to get the crossmember for the transmission.
With some effort I can get the crossmember that was under the NP435, but I was wondering if my current one will work...
I am in the process of doing a very similar swap, 79 f-150 w/460 and C6 with a 74 F-350 390 and 4 spd both 2wd. Went out and looked, the 4 spd xmember has a dip in the middle where the trans bolts too, where the C6 xmember is flat all the way across. The hook up with the same style mount just looks as if the standard sits lower. Unless its a 1 ton difference only, I'd say you need the other xmember or make one that sits a bit lower..
I got the swap in and I used the trans xmember from the 79, not from the donor vehicle and it bolted in nicely..
As for why the swap, I had the two sitting here, 390 can get better fuel mileage especially with a standard trans, the 460 has a cracked piston wall so it was junk anyway.. so I am doing it because I have these pickups and one tons I just cannot seem to throw things away very well LOL Mostly I needed something to drive to work instead of my 78 power wagon.. My 77 w/460 lost the rear main last fall and the new motor is not quite finished and it won't be a go to work vehicle anyway, never in that big a hurry to get there..
So I am taking the 73 F-350 and making a 79 F-150 live again. I wonder why do it also, hmmm maybe we will call it cleaning up the yard in a constructive manner?
