problem is when i go over a decent bump the truck makes this weird vibrating noise, i have 4x4 on the switch and i switch it to 4x4 then back to 2wd and its gone until the next good size bump. i also have warn manuel locking hubs and the vacuum lines to the old hubs plugged so i don't think it has anything to do with the hubs. is it my gearbox? its a 1999 ford f250 7.3 4x4. any help or ideas would be appreciated.
ya but the thing is when i switch the 4x4 on i don't get out and manually lock the hubs. i just flip the switch from 2wd to 4x4 back to 2wd and the hubs are unlocked the entire time, so how would the hubs change without me getting outside and locking them. im going to work on the bearing this weekend i just dont understand how the 4x4 switch is fixing it when its not hooked up to the hub.
When you put it in 4x4 the transfer case spins the front axles along with the needle bearings so they spin approximately the same speed even though the hubs aren't locked. It is basically the same effect as locking your hubs with the t/case off. The difference is your spider gears will spin the axle with the lesser friction more.
