Starter solenoid bad????
Ok my friend has a '00 350 with the v10. About a week ago it would not start but he was able to jump the solenoid and get it fired up. He got it home and replaced the solenoide. Well the truck is doing it again, but this time he can not even jump it. If he lets the truck sit and cool down then it will start right up....but this is not always the case.....sometimes it will fire up when its hot. Unfortunitly he lives in wyoming and me in montana so i can only put on here what he is telling me over the phone. Any ideas???????

More than likely its the starter itself------sounds like it to me anyway. Yes the solenoid can begin to fail and jumping across it fire the starter but assuming all connections to the solenoid are tight and clean of corrosion it stands to reason the starter might be failing even if it occasionally does turn.
I'd first check for operation of the starting circuit to the solenoid, making sure the ignition switch in fact energizes it and checking for voltage on its output side. All connections especially the higher amperage cables along the starter circuit need to be free of corrosion, tight and cables in good condition.
If possible remove the starter and take it to the nearest bigger parts seller like NAPA, Advance Auto Parts ect ect ect and have them test it for excessive amp draw or open windings. Intermittant operation such as described can be any number of things but typically its the starter itself. Not knowing the mileage but seeing the year its not uncommon for the starter to fail at this age.
Good news they're easy to change out---just be sure to disconnect to battery positive lead BEFORE removing it!
