i made the mistake of letting my dad drive my truck so now he has the diesel bug. he's found a good looking 2000 model but the problem is that i've heard the mileage showing on the truck isn't right. let me be clear i DO NOT want to know how to roll the mileage back on one or anything of that matter. its illegal and i dont even want to know how its done. i just want to know how i can find out if one has had that done. someone said i could take it to the dealership and they could tell us. i just dont want him ending up in a situation with a bad truck like i've been in before. so is there any way to tell if mileage has been rolled back?
Thake the vin number to a Ford dealership and get an oasis report, it will show past service and the milage it was done. The oasis report will only show work that was done at a dealership. You can also get a carfax report, it will show work done at other shops. IIRC they also show registration milage each time the vehicle was inspected or licensed. Hope this helps.
How about a CarFax and/or OASIS report at the dealer to show recall/warranty work and the date/mileage when that was done? If no 'events' triggered these files, you won't know any more than you did, but it's worth a shot.
If the truck is a 2000 you might not be able to get an OASIS. After 10 years from the manufacturing date Ford erases all information it has about the vehicle from their system. I tried to get one last year for my 1999 and I was a few months too late. Check the build date in the door jam and see if your 10 years is up. I would definitely get a CARFAX.
just got the carfax on it and everything turned out fine. i took a look at it and its dryer than mine! no oil leaks very dry in the valley. seems to be a all around good truck. i guess maybe its time to give him the go ahead
I know that its pretty easy on older GM's, but never messed with a Ford.
Its easy to do if you have a gauge cluster from a lower mileage truck.
Example: I restored a 79 Trans Am with 125,000 on the clock. I replaced the clusted because of a dead tach from a parts car with 80,000 miles. Took the car out of state, and to the DMV to have the out of state inspection done, she verified the vin, and copied the mileage from the odo and printed a new title. I then came back to my home state and had a new title printed up with the lower mileage.
Its that simple...Keep in mind That I did not do this on purpose. I was in the middle of the restoration and a divorce, so I temporarily sold the car to an out of state friend so she couldn't get it (and she wanted it)
The odometer slipped my mind until I bought the car back months later and noticed the title.
Couple of tips I have heard is look to see if the numbers are alinged perfectly...they should be if they are out of sequence theres a hot clue. Also check the brake pedal pad...excessive wear is a good clue. Just my $.02...good luck on your findings hope it works out for you and your pops!!!
