I'd look into getting a professional cleaning of your injectors or just replacing them outright. If everything is truely stock, there's a good chance the injectors are causing the engine to run lean and loose power. My 460 powered truck was pulling worse than some half-ton chebbys that my friends have until I got new injectors (and cut out the cat). Just make sure you change your fuel filter and run some Seafoam through everything before you put the new injectors in. No need to pass a bunch of junk through brand new/freshly cleaned injectors.
Other than that, I'd agree with what's been said about the long tube headers and the 460 intake. It really is a lot better placement for cold air and for a larger air volume.
Guys,
I apologize for not getting back on here as soon as I wanted, but my home computer was on the blink. Nevertheless, I HAVE NOT changed the thermostat, it was only a suggestion I had received in conjunction with the hypertech chip/ and K&N cold air induction unit. My gas mileage has always been pitiful with this truck since new...11 to 12.5...so losing anymore really doesn't bother me as long as the torque would increase with the 410's.
Where would you guys buy the Ring/Pinion...Side Bearings and Carrier Bearings to complete theis job both fron and back? WHAT Brand do you recommend since FORD no longer produces the part? Also how much should I expect to pay for a new set of factory injectors?.....as this idea seems very appropriate since the ones in the truck are original and have never been cleaned. Thanks again for all your input, and time much appreciated!
IMO you will be wasting your money on any of this stuff if you don't put a real cam in that motor first, this vintage 5.0 is literally strangled with a puny cam that doesn't even manage 0.400" lift at the valve. The block will be roller compatable however so a roller cam from a later 5.0 would easily go in, the ideal candidate would be one from a '94+ truck 5.0, combine that with longtube headers and you'll have a motor that makes very respectable power above 2000rpm.. a hugh improvement over what you have now. All tolled you could do this for a few hundred dollars depending where you source the parts from, they often show up on ebay and local classified sections and may also be available in a junkyard motor close to you. Changing the cam is pretty involved.. the motor has to be stripped down to the bare longblock, but this change is easily the biggest bang for the buck here, no other change including gearing will deliver the same results.
