Engine Swap

Hi,i need a little input..I searched but couldnt find everything i needed..I have a 1987 f150 302 with AOD Tranny..I converted it over to Mass air..I found a used Motor Sport conversion on Ebay..The Ford Part on the ECM is f3zf-12a650-db ..It came with a Piggyback Harness and a Mass Air Sensor..I now have used it for 5 months with no problems except one..Neither of my to scanners will comunicate with the ECM..I have a Snap-On and a Auto X-Ray..Luckily i have had no problems,so far..I got a good deal on a 351w..Bored 30 over, mild cam, with headers-Came without a Carb
..The engine has a carb intake on it..The Engine is a 1989 351w..I also got a c6 tranny with the Engine..Here are my Questions

1.If i want to retain the fuel inj.,will the lower and upper intake work from the 302 to the 351w? I think i can use the upper but not lower?

2.If i stay with the Injection,do i need 24lb injectors and a different MAF Sensor?

3.Not being able to Comunicate with the ECM is a Pain. What other ECM can i use from the salvage yard and retain the 1 O2 sensor?

4.Here is my Big question--I am on a Budget..Which way would be more cost affective?...

Didnt mean to Babble on but all input is appreciated..

1. No, you need a complete 5.8 upper and lower intake, distributor, and fuel rail, the 5.8 motor is physically larger in both width and height with larger bearings on everthing so these parts don't transfer. As a result you also need a 5.8 rear sump oilpan and pickup if the motor isn't already so equipped, again the 5.0 parts simply don't fit.
2. No, 19lb and the existing MAF meter are fine.
3. The EEC communication problem is most likely incompatability with the scanners or possibly a wiring problem in the truck, have you tried to flash codes on the check engine light? Put a jumper between the Self-Test in and Sig_Rtn pins on the EEC test harness, turn the key to run and they will flash on the CE light. The EEC test connector is located just behind the airbox of course, and as far as I know most of the modern scanners are not compatable with this old system, you need a simple code reader like the Equus 3145.

4. Making a 5.8 work will also require a 28oz AOD flexplate and some exhaust system mods. Both blocks use the same trans bolt pattern and engine mounts though so physically installing the motor is a breeze. I have the same Ford MAF kit and have used it with a mildly built 5.8 in my truck, and it ran great.

Shouldn't he upgrade the trans a little while the motor is out of the truck?? I thought the AOD was one of the weaker trans and he is wanting to put it behind a 5.8 with a cam and headers. Not trying to scare the OP but i want to know for myself as well...

A shift kit is always a good idea for these transmissions, I have one in my truck and so equipped my AOD had no trouble with a cammed 5.8 and is still kicking.

Thanks for the replys..I lucked up today..About a month ago i found a 94 351w for my friend,he took the fuel injection off to put a carb on and this morning, after i posted my message he brought me the intakes, fuel injectors, acc brackets and all accesories(as if it fell from the sky--yeehaww) i will try to pull the codes from the data link..The 351w came with a c6 tranny..Will this flexplate work with that aod?..I already put a shift improver kit in the AOD,so good there..I am thinking of using the c6 instead (Bullet Proof)..Oh yea, i was looking at a stock y pipe from like a early 80s model with 351w,will this work for me--i could get rid of the Cats then..I am going to run true duals a couple months from now, when my wallet recovers LOL..Thanks

If this is your DD i wouldnt insist on using the C6 unless you tow a lot and am not worried about single digit gas mileage around town. Also, I am not sure if that flexplate is the correct one to use. You will have to wait to hear from someone that knows a little more about trannies.

If your truck has dual tanks it will be hard to run true duals around the trans case and gas tank. Everything has to go down the passanger side. A 2.5" exhaust with headers into a single 3" straight through muffler will flow as well or better than duals

There is a thread on here that has pics of dual exhaust running down the passenger side, looks pretty tight..I will probably do the 3" single..LMC offers a true dual with glass packs but i dont like the way it exits..I may order that and fabricate it a little..I think i will go with the c6..Thanks for your reply..

No the C6 flexplate won't work.. it will bolt up to the TC but the front-back offset is wrong and that will push the snout back into the pump and destroy the transmission. Don't go there, get a proper AOD flexplate.

The C6 may or may not be stronger or more durable.. it's not by default despite what many people think and can just as easily fail.

You can get rid of the cats and use the 5.0 Y pipe, just cut it off between the front and rear cat sections and hollow out the front near the Y. It will have to be widened to fit on the 5.8 but that's not hard for somebody with a welder. Lots of other options too including using an aftermarkey Y just depends how much work you can do.

Couldn't he drill the head bolt holes on the 302 heads out to the size of the 351, and use the entire top end of the 302 with the 351 block?

No you're missing the key point.. the block itself is wider so the 302 intake is too narrow regardless what heads are on it. Both motors use the same too so swapping them gains nothing.
