Pretty sure you'll have to replace the whole mechanism...that's what I had to do on my '76 when I had that same problem. It's been so long since I've done it that I don't think I can walk you through, but I'm sure someone in the 67-72 forum can help you out.

^ ^ You don't have to replace the whole mechanism, Steve. All the OP needs is a new shift collar. The pic shows it's broken internally. ^ ^

Welcome to FTE & the SoCal Chapter

The shift collar that the shift lever fits into is broken internally, which is very common problem. The collar is available from Ford.

D5TZ7228A (replaced C5TZ7228B & C9TZ7228A) .. Shift Collar Kit / Fits: 1965/77 F100/350 with A/T.

MSRP: $65.98 // FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $47.51.

PARTSGUYED = Horizon Ford in Seattle (Tukwila) WA.

btw: The only Ford dealer locally that has one in stock is Galpin Motors on Roscoe Blvd. in Van Nuys. But you won't get the FTE discount price from them.

Bill, you are F'n AMAZING!

Of course, to you, this is just routine stuff......

Impressive, just the same, to a layman.

The shifter on my truck is a bit loose and it the indicator and the gear display plate do not quite line up (need to move the shifter halfway to the gear). Could this be a similar issue?

I doubt it.

When the collar breaks (on an A/T), you're stuck in whatever position the shift lever is in.

More than likely, the upper and lower steering column bearings are worn, ([2] C3DZ3517A-available from Ford), plus...on the manual control selector on the steering column under the hood is a rubber bushing and insulator. When the bushing ages, it cracks apart causing slop in the lever.

The bushing and insulator came as a kit (C5TZ7343A). Ford just obsoleted this kit, but there are 100's available at dealers, obsolete parts vendors.
