I'm trying to remove the front rotors on my 97 F-350 4x4, automatic. I've used, heat, a sledge, the bolt trick and nothing? Am I missing something. I've looked in the manual and none of the methods they have to remove the hubs and rotors match what I have. Here are two pictures I took a few minutes ago, can anyone help me out? thanx!!
Going on your pics you will have to remove the bearing retainer nuts, slide the whole hub off the spindle, press out the lugs and then remove the rotors from the back side of the hubs.
Are those dents in the rotor face from a sledge hammer?
Once the two bearing retainer nuts are removed, the entire hub will fall off. No reason to beat anything to death. This hub will litterally fall right off.
Then with the etire hub on the bench, you can address your rotor issues.
Oddly enough the rotor does not look to be in that bad of shape., Unless of course those are dents in the face of the rotor itself.
those are just smudge marks on the rotor. Only beating I did was with an orange mallet to help the bolt method along. I finally got the outer ring of the bearings out and now I see the retaining nut. I'm having trouble locating the socket/tool I need to remove that. I have to use my cell phone for internet connection, so doing searches is VERY slow. Can anyone give me a suggestion?
The rotor itself is fine, but the guard behind it is rusted and falling apart and currently rubbing up against the rotor. That is why I need to remove the rotor, so replace/remove the guard.
I see. Glad you were only using a dead blow hammer.
Anyway, I have some notes on my desk, and I have this number written down:
Dana 60 Front Spindle Nut Socket Napa #775-9025
I believe that you can use it to see if your local napa has it.
I may have one better for you in case that the Napa is closed already.
Autozone might also carry this:
15006-001. I think this is a 6 prong socket for the dana 60F.
Good luck. Oh, and please, I do not know if these are the exact tools for your ride, but I think they might be.
just ask for a dana 60 locknut spindle wrench. tell them the vehicle so you make sure you get the right one. dana 44's and i believe 50's, use a different one.
OK, so I finally got the socket from Napa yesterday and got the rotors and hub off this morning, but now...... I'm trying to get the disc brake dust cover off. I know I know, just cut it off and leave it, but this is also a bit of a learning job for me, so I'm trying to take it off completely. I removed the 5 bolts and now I'm stuck with this?
I almost forgot, the socket I had to use for the bearings was a "2-3/4" Round Hex Wheel Bearing Lock Nut Socket". Napa part number 3456. I got the 2-1/2" the first time and that obviously didn't work. You can see the socket in the lower right of the picture above.
Hit the spindle back and forth with the rubber mallet and it'll work off there, but if you're not replacing the shield you need to cut the center out of that one and put it back in. It acts as a spacer shim and you can wind up with funky hub issues without it.
