My truck has developed a small oil leak. I added some kind of miracle gasket conditioner, and it slowed it but didn't stop it. Here's my question: Would my oil leak be a pan gasket or a rear main seal? I'm leaning on the pan gasket, since it looks like oil is leeching out at the rear, and along the side near the starter. Just looking for second opinions before I plan on a course of action....Pics below (Note: The underside of my truck is pretty grime free, so it's easy to tell where the oil is leaking from).
well easiest way to tell is clean all the oil and grime up and drive it. park it and get under it immediatly to see where its leaking from. my guess is if you put in some snake oil and it helped the leak its the rear main.
well you can see that your oil pan gasket in the second picture is extruding out. mine is doin the same thing on my truck, but i just havent gotten around to doin it just yet.
UPDATE........Since 1997, I've only been putting about 500-750 miles per year on the truck. Since March of this year, I've put 2,200 miles on the truck, kept the "Miracle Stop Leak" stuff in the crankcase. Been monitoring the drip pan under the truck in the garage, and the oil level. Leak has stopped. I guess the gasket got dry, shrunk a little, and caused a small leak. With increased usage the gasket got oil soaked again, expanded, and sealed. So far so good...........
