how much would this be worth? it's for sale at an estate auction, and apparently it runs, and was used on the farm..just looking for an approximate value (don't want to bid too high!) Amos Moyer, Estate - Schuylkill Haven, PA
thanks!
Looks like a pretty decent, straight unmolested truck from the pictures. You can't tell from the pictures the condition of the floor. The floors rust out in this trucks. If it's solid that great, but if it needs parts replaced there are places that sell replacement pieces. It has the flathead V8, that adds value. I bet it'll bring $2000-2500. Sad thing is some hot rodder with deep pockets will bid on it just for the motor and part out or scrap the rest. I would say if you can get it for $2000 you did good, as long as it runs.
Just beware, if you're new to old vehicles the buying price is just the start. Even though the truck looks pretty nice there are some major rust issues like the box. No one reproduces the 8' Express box so if you want to keep it as a F-2 pickup you're going to have to patch it. The front fenders look decent but I know from seeing the rust where the two parts meet there are going to some major rust issues there. Again, no on makes patches for these and you'll have to fab patches. Since it's a F-2 it should have one piece 16" wheels are a lot better than a F-3 with Widow Maker rims. Also, this is a truck, it's going to ride like a buck board. There's not a lot of give in the suspension.
Most mechanical parts and cab parts are for a F-1, which are easier to find, will fit the F-2. I have a page on my web site listing the parts that interchange between the models.
I'm just trying to give you a heads up to what you're in for if you buy this truck. I'm not trying to discourage you, I have a '49 F-2 and I love driving it, buck board suspension and armstrong steering. It's almost driving season and I can't wait to get it out of winter hibernation.
Good, hope it's a good truck and you get it for a decent price. Let us know either way, we would like to know what it goes for. If you bid on it bid what you think it's worth. If you want it bid $5K for it, it's your money and if it's what your realy want then it's worth. Just beware of auction fever.
And if it doesn’t ………..$ 10.00 to $ 3000.00 for parts, what a crap shoot, ……….so if it runs but as ¾ ton it does have a certain homeliness (like as in UGLY) and somewhat subjectively less value, so lets say a high of $ 4000.00, needs a engine, value is almost nothing, ( $1000.00) split the “difference carp shoot”, bid is $ 2000.00
Looks good from 3000 miles away.
thanks a lot for the great responses...very informative. I am actually very new to this, so all of that info was very very helpful. I got more info about the truck, apparently it is in running condition, was actually used on this guys farm and he was the original owner, was sick during the winter so that is apparently where the rust was from...sounds like a good truck i think. thanks so much bob, i knew to ask those questions thanks to your reply!
If you still have a good independent non McParts auto parts supplier in your area they might be able to get everything you need. The last time I did the brakes on my '49 F-2 I had my shoes relined by a local brake and clutch shop.
