Choke Conversion
I read a previous post about the proper wiring of an electric choke..Anyways I got to thinking I have a motorcraft 2bbl carb with the thermal actuated choke and i would like to have the electric choke. My friend has a 79 T-Bird with the 351M like I have and he has the same carb, but on the choke he has a plug on it with wires coming off of it. Is there any way I can convert my choke the way it is now to an electric assisted or fully electric choke w/o purchasing a new carb all together? Thanks guys.

If you can't find the Ford choke cap, use a Holley cap. It will fit. It has two terminals. One goes to ground. The other to the stator terminal. It is made for 12 volts but works fine on 7.

The hot air pickup system is fine when it is new. I have had too much trouble with the tubes coming apart at the manifold. Since I did the electric conversion, the choke works everytime.

Choke Conversion
Well it's good to know a holley type electric housing will fit. I have not had a ford housing that has not burnt out on me. A long time ago I checked, and seemed to remember no one carried the housing, and the Ford dealer wanted an outrageous price. The housing just burnt out on my truck, so I decided to see if things have changed in the past few years. Nope. No one seems to carry it, and I checked with Ford and they wanted $65.00. I didn't want to, but bit the bullet and put a manual choke conversion on it. Boy I am really happy with it. It gets twice the gas mileage that it did with the broken auto choke. I also did something different this time that I usually don't do. I usually use the whole cable, running it through the firewall near the steering column, and routing it around to the choke. They never do work smoothly this way. This time I cut most of the cable off, and mounted it underneath the ash-tray. I drilled a hole right above the brace for the dash, and ran it directly to the carb. Boy it works so smooth! The only thing that bugs me is it wouldn't clear the original air cleaner. I modified the air cleaner to fit, but it's still not the way I want it.

Choke Conversion
So, the advantage to the electric choke is it is more reliable in the long run? I can put any ford or holley elect choke module on my Holley or Motorcraft carb? And all I have to do to hook it up is plug it to an electrical source that is charged only when the key is in the "on" position?
Considering the condition of my choke tubes, I think I have something to add to my "wanted" list.

Choke Conversion
I forgot the part number but it was a standard Holley replacement cap. Was $26 a few years ago. I like manual chokes also, but you have to remember to pull them out and push them in. The electric choke was one of my better mods.
