The only IP's I know of that had problems had the internal fuel screw bottomed out, probably about as hard as they could twist the screw.

A couple of flats backed out should not be required, just don't leave it completely maxed out.

Mine is about 1/2 flat from maxed out since the day it was new.

Opening up the down pipe, tail pipe and trash the stock muffler will help you boost higher and at lower RPM's.

On a 7.3 I would say the max safe boost should be set to about 15 PSI.

[QUOTE=Dave Sponaugle;8694867
93_F250, have you adjusted the external torque screw?

The external torque screw is on 92.5 and later IP's.
Located on the rear drivers side of the IP, slanted up at a 45 degree angle, brass straight bit screw in the center with a brass lock nut outside.

If you do have the torque screw, put a screw driver in the center screw to keep it from turning while you loosen the lock nut.
Turn the screw out 1/2 turn and retighten the lock nut.

Now go for a drive and see if it spools the turbo any better.[/QUOTE]

dave the only screw that i see on the rear drivers side of the IP slanted up at a 45 angle is a small allen screw not a straight screw could there have been two different types of screws? it does have the lock nut and all its just an allen head just checking first before i fool with the wrong screw. if you want i can snap a pic of it

Same on mine - there was a white plastic "tamper guard" on it. (I assume)

I broke the plastic guard off and adjusted the allan screw a 1/2 turn out (CCW) - not much difference - then another 1/2 turn; very little difference.

At this point I'm going to take it to a reputable shop to have it diagnosed and tuned...

Some did have allen screws, forgot to mention that.

In the original ATS instructions they recommended 2 full turns out, and mentioned nothing about adjusting the internal screw.

Mines probably out three or four turns, but I am running well over 20 PSI of boost.

Warning, if you can manage to get 20 psi out of a stock motor, it will soon give you the opportunity to be doing some of the mods Dave has, lol

While you guys are on the topic, what is the max boost you should push through a stock motor? I have a waste gated banks that puts out around 10 psi but I want to take the motor to it's max potential. Not trying to hijack the thread but figured while you're on the topic...

If you have a stock 6.9, I am going to say stay around 10 or maybe 12 PSI.
With a 7.3, 12 to 15 is rather safe.

If you want to go higher, head studs, milled pistons, intake studs, exhaust gaskets in every joint in the exhaust before the turbo, modified IP's and injectors and the list goes on.

You can run up to about 20 PSI for under 1000 in mods.
If you want to go over 20, the price goes up.

Also once you go over 20 PSI, don't expect great MPG numbers any more, but it will be fun to drive.

Frustraded at this point - I spent my day off yesterday working on my motorcycles to get them ready for the summer - replaced the rear wheel bearings and a new rear tire for Dual Sport, changed the oil & filter in the Sportster...noticed the the throttle cable was real sloppy and needed to be adjusted (AH UMMMM)

Anyway - I took the F250 in today to a reputable 4X4 truck shop here in the county - got there and told him everything I had done so far...... cleaned the air filter, new fuel filter, tweeked the IP fuel screw and the torque screw..ect...no boost no real power.

He tells me this will either be really really long and expensive, or really easy and cheap.

He starts the truck right up - "nice" he says and starts looking at things, my gauge install and where I tapped the sending units and boost line into - asks me few more questions, gets back in and power brakes looking at the boost gauge, then shuts the motor down.

He gets out and looks at IP Pump, explains there's a shop mid-state that rebuilds them.. Then asks me to get into the truck and floor the throttle, without the truck running, I do.... after working on my Harley the day before - it hits me like flood water - "bad throttle cable" I say from the cab - "YUP" he says, shows me where the keeper clip has worn down (it looked ok from the engine bay) - gets a tie wrap and says when I get home he's sure I can rig up something better. No charge....

10 lbs of boost and 850* EGT climbing the Conjeo Grade (7+% grade) at 75MPH with a lot more left (but not in the afternoon traffic)

I told him when I get back from travel I'll have him replace the front wheel seals (one is leaking). I've got to give him some business.

One embarrassed owner now driving a bad-****, super clean, Turbo IDI F250.
