Has anyone installed a B & M ShiftPlus electronic shift improver for an E4OD? Of course B & M says they are great, but I wanted to hear from someone that has actually tried one.
I used one on my truck. It was noticeably different, but.... with the tall tires and being more used to how a transmission shifts after a shift kit was installed, I went another route. I did instal a valvebody kit in the trans. Then when I flipped the swithch it was much better. I later made enough mods to the engine to require a chip and I had the transmission shift firmness adjusted more there. Now, even with the 39's on it, the tranny shifts like a hammer dropping. I am certain that if I had 31's or 33's the truck would kick sidways like a mustang going from first to second. Ok all that said. The shift improver plus does work! I just wanted more. Oh yea I still have the one I removed. Later, Hippie.
Thanks. I had a B & M stage 2 shift kit in my '66 Mustang, and yes indeed, it would definately kick sideways shifting from first to second. Built 289, 9" 3.89 traction lock, big fat 50 series tires in the back. Man I wish I still had that car. It was a blast to drive, and turned quite a few heads. A cop actually pulled me over one time to ask me about it. He said he saw the stickers on my new tires and thought they looked like they stuck out too far. He never even asked for my license, just wanted to ask me about the car.
I installed one on my 94 F-250 with E40D and it burned up. I put it on about Oct 01 It worked good till around xmas you could feel the differnet shift settings, but then it stopped working. I just left it off being winter. When I got laid off in march i had a lot of extra time to look at the truck. I pulled the box down frum under the dash and the back half had expanded to twice its size. it looked melted and the black casing had this burnt brown color to it. Now my cruse and revers lights don't work. Im not shore if something else shorted out all these things or if it shorted out my lights and cruse, being that they are on the same circuit. I wrote B@M and coplained but they never wrote me back.
tsherrif, your story is common. The B&M electronic shift improver for the E4OD will melt itself, and sometimes your ECM/PCM. B&M has to be aware of the problem IMO, I'm guessing they just don't care.
Just wanted to bring this back up to the top. I installed the shift improver on my '94 E4OD and experienced what seems to be a common problem. (now i wish I researched the product a little more before purchasing). After the installation, it worked as promised for about two weeks until I was nearing the end of a 400 mile trip north when the tranny forgot how to shift. It completely omitted first and OD and was cutting power to the fuel pump at every shift. After replacing the valve body and computer ($600 later) the tranny is fine. the shop that did the work blames the problem on the shift improver (i am inclined to believe him). I called B&M and the blew me off stating that if it was working properly for a while "there is no problem with the unit" In additon, they claim they "have never had a problem with the product" I wish something more could be done as $600 is a very large expense for a college student, especially after laying down $6000 for the truck in the first place.
Well, I just needed to vent......thanks for reading
Has anyone ever used the 2-wire switch/ shift improver from JC Whitney. They sell for $40, but I wonder what it can actual do since there is very little to it...
well, if the JC Whitney product is anything like the B&M unit, the two wires splice into the wiring harness going to the computer, electronically increasing line pressure. I would caution against either of these items. Perhaps my expensive mistake will be a usefull example for anyone considering somehing like this. Instead, i would install a real shift kit to get the performance you are looking for as they are the same price (much more worrk to install, however)
I would be a bit leary of any electronic shift improver, I an a PC tech, and my experience tells me that heat + electronics = big mess. Also if you go mechaincal, it;s gonna perform better.
