had to replace water pump and timing cover gasket so ima do the chain while im at it, am i correct that it is a one bolt gear? and i gonna repalce it should i go stock roller or double roller,
The camshaft gear is bolted with the fuel pump eccentric holding it on. I buy the stock timing set with a new steel gear on top and bottom. A lot of the engines have a plastic coated top gear.
You can get a true roller chain if you want to spend the extra money, but a regular gear will last a long time.
Just remember to drop the oil pan down a little bit to get the timing cover off. The best job is done by pulling the whole oil pan off, but if it's in the truck, that is too much trouble usually. A timing cover gasket kit will usually give you new pieces for the front of the oil pan seals.
While you are at it, check the crankshaft damper where the front timing cover seal runs. If it has a groove from the seal, they sell sleeves to press over the groove to repair it.
It's a cylinderical device that is mounted sort of off-center such a way that it pushes down
on the fuel pump's arm once per camshaft revolution. They look similar to this:
well they had a double roller on there but i replaced it back to the stock one only cause thats the only one i could get this weekend, it wont be a daily driver so, everything but the pulley n brackets are back together, ill find out tomorrow if i did a good job or not,. hoping i did haha
EFI 302 doesn't use the fuel pump eccentric. I'm not sure if the cam gear differs on the later models or not.
I have a 86 efi engine that does. But it only uses the one big cup looking piece, I guess they are using it as a large washer.
If you convert to a carb and fuel pump, you need to get the other outer ring piece that goes with it. The outer ring piece is what rubs on the eccentric, not the fuel pump arm.
