I took the front cover off my 351 and noticed the double roller timing chain had about 1/4" of play in it. How much play is acceptable? I think the chain is fairly new but for the price should i replace it anyways?
From what I have read in my Hayne's Manual the accetable play or travel in the chain is about 1/2 inch. If its a double roller chain will run you around 40$ in summit for one of those, it would be worth replaceing if you have it torn down that far.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Feb-02 AT 02:16 AM (EST)]You'll probably get about 1/4" play in a new chain!!! But check the sprockets for any wear. If you have it apart, it doesn't take much time and money to put in a new one.
On a new chain and gears there should be no play. Always replace both gears and chain...in fact I don't think I've ever seen just the chain sold seperatly. Spend the few extra $$ and get the roller chain. Deen
