I have an early job 1 SD CC with the external filter. I have called 5 different dealerships around my area trying to find out about getting the trans flushed and the filters changed. I've been quoted $839.00 at one dealer, $209.00 at another that informed me that the filters would not have to be changed because the flushing cleans them, another dealership told me that the filters only came together in a kit when I told them I HAD the external filter already, and that it would be $380.00 if they used MY filters. Another one said it would be $190.00 if they used my external filter, and finally I got one guy who informed me that the TorqShift in the 08's was a "sealed" transmission and didn't need the fluid changed for 100,000 miles, and that the filters didn't need changing. I asked him if he was referring instead to the rear diff, but he guaranteed me no, he knew what he was talking about, and that my tranny didn't need flushing or the filters changed, which I found odd in a sense that usually they will tell you that you DEFINITELY need this or that done just to get your money. This guy actually ran me away. So I've come to the conclusion that I'm not going to be taking my truck to ANY of the dealerships around me, and that I need to ask any of you on this forum if you've had a good experience from a dealership who KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT and if so, let me know where it is and I'll DRIVE THERE for the knowledgeable staff. Thanks
The recommended service interval for your transmission is 30,000 miles
about it being a sealed unit not needing service for 100,000 miles is hogwash,
The pan gasket is reusable and tranny pan should have a drain plug, aside from a flush draining the pan will get 10 of the 16 quartz of oil out of it, and change filter, fairly easy, 800$ is insane!!!
There is a in line filter as well on the cooler line, I attempted to change this filter recently on a repair of one of these rigs but found the filter housing bracket to be chincy and flexed to much for the torque required to remove the bowl to replace the little roll of toilet paper that goes in there, so I just left it since it only filters a portion of the oil in the system and from what was in the pan I just left it be, nothing in the pan to indicate particulates in the tranny,
Scott in re reading your post, what you may find at any and all dealerships is intentional ignorance, so heres what you do,
Go back to the dealership that quoted you 800$ to perform a Tranny service
tell them that you think that you are capable of draining and refilling your transmission.
Your vehicle is 2008 model year so should still be under the basic power train warranty if under 36,000 miles
Tell them you would like to have the SP fluid free of charge!
They will look at you as if you have gone nuts
Then refer to the laws passed in 1975 regarding manufactures warrantys
They are the magnuson-moss warranty act
Ask them to provide you a wavier from the FTC or free tranny juice
simple as that. Think this is crasy well look into it as the law reads if a manufacture states that only one type of oil is needed to meet the requirements of their warranty which Ford does state and since nobody has purchased this patent from Ford and even though others claim to have compatible fluid with out purchasing the rights from Ford, They could and have and will decline warranty repairs due to incompatible fluid,
so if this is Fords position on this you as the consumer are protected from this racket by the FTC and can be provided this special fluid "free of charge"
Torqshift ignorance, your going to have to look in the aftermarket for straight answers on this tranny
Not sure if there were any changes but we had our '05 serviced every 30K and they changed the external filter both times, it was $300-$400 to do, the Mercon SP is a big part of the price.
After reading the forums here and talking to a friend I trust Ive decided to just change out the external filter, drain the fluid from the pan and fill her back up. Then in a few weeks I'll drain her again and fill her up. SP is $6.00 a quart here locally, so I'll be out a hundred bucks, a little more, for the fluid, but at least I'll know I did it right. I just can't trust someplace that one, doesn't even know what they charge for a service and two, doesn't even REALLY know what needs to be done. I just don't trust them after this. Not that I did before. I would have liked to have had the tranny flushed, but knowing my luck these people will put 75/140 weight in it. I'll take my chances doing it myself.
Ok. After getting under there, I've tried getting the quick connect fittings disconnected (pulled out of) the filter. The lines wont budge. I'm using the Ford disconnect tool, and have the workshop manual. It says I might have to take the quick connect fittings off of the filter housing to get the lines to disconnect, but so far no luck. It's like they are stuck. I've pulled and pulled. The tool, 307-459, is just a standard quick disconnect tool, which allows you to gain leverage on the line and pull it out of the fitting. But I seem to be having problems. Anyone done this before? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have my tranny fluid dumped everyear (which is overkill I admit) it costs $250.00 (cdn) taxes in. The mechanic I go to suggests changing the ext filter if there has been water in the transmission or other suspected damage. Mine is not dumped it is transfused or pumped out and forced in. Some will argue this may cause loosening of debris, I have not encountered that. Either way $800.00 is way too much. Good luck
Mine is a 2008 Job 2 truck with an internal filter. However, I added an external filter from Summit that cost me $35 plus another $5 for larger size hoses and fittings. I have tried to post pictures on this site and there is no easy way to do this, so if you want to see pictures, just PM me and I will send you pictures of the install. I did a dealer tranny flush at the same time as adding the external filter and the whole ticket was less than $200. Later I also did a transfer case flush and refill and it cost me $39.
