This is a PWM of only 30 amp output, many go up to 200 amps they are used to make brown gas aka hydrogen. The energy to produce, compress and control it far exceeds the gains. Granted a clean energy source with water vapor exhaust but a dry gas. Hydrogen has a flame front speed under detonation due to compression of over 9,000' per/second, see any problem here in an IC engine compared to a gasoline flame front speed?
Put it in other terms, a gasoline engine at 12.0:1 CR at 1,500 rpm's will have a flame front speed of 16.5 m/s, a hydrogen engine will yeld 48.3 m/s flame front speed. See any problem here? Detonation.
Could a guy change the timing enough to compensate? I think that to do it correctly a guy would probably have to build the engine to be compatible, similar to propane power if you want to have it perform like a gas engine.
Not likely. Even if you did- the electricity that your using to seperate the hydrogen and oxygen in the water isn't free- that's extra load on the alternator. Any improvement made by such a thing would be made more efficiently with a simple water injection, and that will reduce detonation.
