I received my new Red Head steering gearbox yesterday for my 2005 V10 4wd Ex. (Plodding my way through my Excursion Improvement Program. ) I was looking through the shop manual on the steps for removal/reinstallation of the gearbox (Section 211-02-9) - I assume those are the proper steps to replace the factory unit with this thing? Do I really need that special tool they list, which is used to disconnect the drag link? How challenging is this procedure? I've always done the basic stuff like brakes, shocks, etc, but have never progressed beyond that up to this point. My neighbor has a service garage and would probably do it for me for a good price if it's just going to be a PIA for me, but I kind of want to do it myself. Thoughts?
I plan on doing this sometime in the near future and have the same questions. I just did this in my 68 Buick GS and it was no big deal, but the Ex is a completely different beast.
You will need a good quality pitman arm puller to get the arm off the box. I put the puller on mine and had it cranked down as tight as i could get it and it didn't budge, even with a few good whacks with a hammer. I got up, and turned around to get my mapp torch and all of a sudden it sounded like a shotgun going off. It had popped loose.
Other than that is was fairly easy to do.
Excellent! Thanks for the link. Looks like I'll be tackling this this weekend, along with installing new Hawk pads, cryo rotors, doing the caliber pin mod, and installing the remote control system for my Rancho shocks. Should be an enjoyable weekend of wrench turning.

Indeed, pics, pics, pics! Good luck with your project man.
I was lucky, I guess you could say, when I had to replace my box. The shaft coming out of the box that fits into the pitman arm had sheared off flush with the pitman arm. Unfortunately, I didn not get to replace with a Red Head.
