incorrect.
the powerstroke has a HPOP. it needs an electric fuel pump to drive it, and it is in the tank.
and there is no carter inline pump.

HPOP stands for high pressure oil pump that is fed by the oil pump in the pan. The HPOP oil fires the injectors. The 99 and on trucks have an electric pump somewhere but I don't think it is in the tank.
Up in the 94.5-97 stroke forum, when they want to make big power the convert to an electric pump system with regulated return to get more fuel.

94-97 PSD's have a mechanical lift pump in the valley driven off of the cam, 7.3 Super Duties run an inline electric on the framerail, about beside the transfer case, Carter P74221 IIRC. I have owned and worked on both, and have changed said pumps before...

Like Tom said, the HPOP has nothing to do with pumping fuel, it's there for the high pressure oil that actuates the unit injectors.
I thought you own a PSD TJC?

The 94 to 97 Stroke engine does indeed have a mechanical lift pump about where the intake throat is located on an IDI engine, just behind the fuel filter driven by a piston going through the valley pan.
Driven off a cam lobe near the center of the cam, no way it would work on an IDI motor.

99 Strokes do have a frame mounted electric pump, 110 PSI pressure up to the fuel pressure regulator in the bottom of the fuel filter housing.

Common mod for the 94 thru 97 Strokes, remove the mechanical lift pump and filter housing.
Install a frame mounted filter and 99 Stroke fuel pump, then install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to increase the rail pressure to 65 or 70 PSI with the excess going into the return line.

Still trying to get my 97 Stroke to keep up with the 86 IDI.

Back in 94, the high pressure oil pump was what brought around CI-4 rated oil.
Many engine power problems were related to the high pressure oil pump wearing out the non CI-4 rated oil anti foaming inhibitors and an oil change did fix the engine power problems.

CI-4 oil has a bunch more anti foaming addatives which are required for the Stroke/HPOP injection systems.

i do have a powerstroke, and it has an intank pump, just like the other 32 we have in work.

but i also had a brainfart on the early powerstrokes. i forgot all about the cam driven mechanical pumps in the valley.
but i never saw one with an electric inline pump. it must be on the late 97-98 and early 99 trucks.

Incorrect there is no pumps in tank the 1994.5 to 1997 have no electric pumps none at all and the hpop and fuel circuits are 2 completely separate circuits. the hpop is to drive the heui injectors which use motor oil not fuel the fuel is pressurized to 55 psi by a 2 stage mechanical lift pump that is located in the valley the 1999 up use an eletric pump instead of the mechanical lift pump. now how do i know this? i have a modded psd!!

The electric inline pumps are 99 and later Super Duty trucks.

I need to check my service manual CD to be sure, but no electric in tank pump on my 97 that I know of.

I assume you have done the electric fuel/bypass regulator mod on your Stroke?

Tom, all the Super Duty 7.3's are inline pumps, all that's in the tank is a pickup, which is not much different than what's on the IDI's, even the 6.0L's use a frame mounted pump.
I hate to be an *** about it, but, take a look under your truck.

That's the front driveshaft in the foreground, and the pump on the frame.
I'm probably going to be adding an e-pump and regulated return setup to my stroker... Thing won't keep up with my IDI right now, and the IDI is N/A.... LOL

Well, that's a new one on me, open mouth, insert foot... I even checked parts listings and my Ford shop manuals... I've never seen a diesel Ford with an in tank pump, all my reference material and what I have seen in person all were framerail mounted inline pumps.
Either way, in my humble opinion, all IDI's should have an electric pump feeding them...
