Lol, its an old truck and I want to keep it I just dont 4100.00 (without the wife finding out) to drop on a new motor or rebuilt with warranty. So, with that in mind I'm just trying to make last through the year, I was hoping to just replace the bearings and go about my business, I work offshore and dont really use the truck that often.
Well, as I said before, putting new bearings in there may work for a while, or it may throw a cast iron fit in short order. There's no way to really know how long it will hold up though, short of pulling the engine and getting the crank mic'd.
What was your reason for cracking the engine in the first place? If your crank is already ground down .030" it's already had 2 regrinds or one very heavy regrind done to it. Changing the bearings only will do nothing for you but waste your time. Do yourself a favor and pull the motor and rebuild your lower end. I wouldn't pay someone $4100 for a rebuilt motor... if you could imagine what YOU could do to a motor for $4100 you'd agree.
Not to be an A-hole but I couldn't tell the crank was bad until I got into the engine. It was knocking with low oil pressure and I just wanted to change the bearings and now I find the crank is spun and the bearings and journals read .01 and .04.
If it was knocking the crank needs turned, if it is already 30 under you are going to need to replace it. It is going to be almost impossible to do a quality job swapping the crank under the truck. you will need several hands to hold all the rods in just the right place to install it.
go to your local part house and ask if they offer a reman crank, companies like Gopher reman and similars offer the such. your new bearings would depend on their offerings. might come in a kit. then you're lookin at rental of a hoist, speciality tools, beer for buddies, gaskets and seals, and so on. if your good and have sober buddies, this swap could be done in a weekend. Have the buddies bring their girls over to keep your lady busy and outta the garage, that'll drop two hours off the project at least.
I have a question. Are you going to pull the heads and pistons, if not swapping the crank without pulling the engine is going to be close to impossible. Another thing is after the tranny is removed with the motor jacked up enough to have the pan off, supporting it well enough to do all off this is going to be real tricky.
