Changing cam and lifters in 292
>Hi there, im changing a camshaft in my 292 and want to
>replace the lifters while im at it, can someone tell me if i
>can pull the lifters out without removing the crankshaft.
It has been known to be done, but its a bit
of a fangle, last time I did it, I used a good
magnet to put them in around the crank, but
expect to spend some serious swearing time on
this job...

Will the engine be out of the truck on an engine stand? If so you have a good chance. You will have to remove the intake and valley pan. With the engine turned upside down pull the camshaft out. This way the lifters will be out of the way. When the cam is out, clip a wooden clothespin on each lifter to hold them up. Now rotate the block so the crankshaft is at the bottom. Then insert a piece of PVC pipe that is cut in half length wise that will reach to the back of the block. Now using an extendable magnet you can push the lifter out of the bore while it is in contact with the magnet and drag it out along the pipe. Replacement is a little trickier but is basically the reverse procedure. You will probably curse the Ford engineers more than once.
Hope this helps.
