355 v. 373

I have friend who is about to buy a new F-150 Lariat Supercrew with a 5.4, 2 wheel drive. He has a choice between identical trucks except one has a 355 rear and the other has a 373 rear. What kind of differnce will there be in these two trucks gas mileage wise in the city and the highway?

The difference in fuel economy between 3.55 and 3.73 gears won't be very noticeable at all. Might be .1 to .2 mpg difference max.

Man, I noticed there is a signifcant difference in the tow ratings between the two. I opted for a 3.55 in my Screw Lariat, as there is plenty of room for what I tow.

On a side note, I found the original sticker for the 2007 Mustang GT I purchased a month ago. It had the 3.73 rear end added as an option. It is quicker than the others I drove, but it seems to run at a little higher RPM at 80mph than the others. It also has Borla exhaust, but everything else is stock, oh and it is a 5spd manual. Could the rear end make the difference in both acceleration and the higher RPM at 80?

If I remember right the rear end ratios (RER) break down like this

For every 3.73 revolutions that the engine turns the drive wheels turn once. Thus in order to push said Mustang at 80 the engine would need to turn at a higher rpm to turn the wheels fast enough to achieve 80 mph then say at 3.15 or 3.31 RER.

I hope I have explained that right off the top of my head.

That is what I thought too. I like the added acceleration, as I don't plan on going 150mph (top speed) anytime soon The ticket for 29pmh over the speed limit was plenty!
