I've had a 7,000# trailer behind mine for the past 600+ miles. It pulled Cabbage Hill on I-84 in eastern Oregon eastbound at 55 in 5th. It did drop to 4th one time when I had to accelerate to pass a truck.
I've got 20,000 miles total on it, and I've never wined for lower gearing
I bought my 6.2 with 3.73s and wished I held out for 4.xx. That said, the 3.73s on my current truck can really haul the mail behind the 6.7. I'd say if it's enough of a concern to ask, hold out for what you want. And the others are right too, not much difference between 3.31 and 3.55.
PD...hauling a 9000lb camper up any grade I have encountered it has never downshifted unless I commanded it to.
I have 3.31 and it does great pulling 9300 camper, never tried it on anything else just bought it about 4500 miles ago it was the best deal too and I was thinking along your lines, should I shouldn't I? Perfectly happy I'm at about 1600 rpm at 70 so geared great for milage too

Thanks for all the input. I only tow 7-8,000 lb on a regular basis. About 12,000 every once in a while but that's usually 40-50 miles round trip.
I have the 3.31 and ordered it that way. with 440 hp under the hood I don't have any need for anything lower. I have a 12,000 gvw equipment trailer I tow and constantly have up to 4,000 lbs. in the bed, never an issue. Regens and OC's get stretched out a bit due to lower rpm's, I follow the IOLM and last summer, which is my busy driving time on the highway, I was able to go 10,000 mi. for an OC. UOA came back perfect, as in ok for extended use.
One has 18" wheels with 3.31 gears. One has 18" wheels with 3.55 gears.
Sounds like either is fine. I'll go with the best deal.
Thanks
For what its worth you're only looking at 100-150 rpms difference at highway speed. Which may get you half a mile to a mile a gallon better. Not a real game changer but anything helps.get the best deal and smile, according to ford there is no rated towing compasity difference between the two. And both are well suited for what you need
