Hi everyone. I have two problems, both with my '89 F250. First, I rebuilt the 351 late last summer. When I first start the engine (cold), I hear a ticking sound. It sounds like it could be internal or an exhaust leak. After I have driven about 1 mile, the noise is gone. This only occurs with a cold engine and is worse when the temperature outside is cold. Almost sounds like an exhaust leak that is closing up as the engine parts expand. Oil pressure is great at all times.
Second, my cruise control surges. When I set it, the truck will quickly speed up by about 5 MPH, then the cruise will back off and let the truck slow down by about 5-8 MPH. Then, the truck surges again. It keeps cycling through this speed up/slow down sequence. Is this most likely a servo problem?
Sounds like the linkage may be binding on the cruise control. You may want to try posting up in the later model truck forum. You may get a better answer.
i would not worry about the ticking noise at all if it stops soon once engine warms up. It could be one of two things, maybe what is known as piston slap which is very common in engines, or could be a valve due to lifter not fully pumping up right away. either way i would not lose sleep as long it goes away quickly. if it starts to linger then i would maybe look into finding the problem. when you do get a mechanics stethoscope or just a long handled screwdriver, you can put one end against your ear and the other on engine looking for noises.
