Occasionally review the 'whiter whites-brighter brites' article in the 'article/spec's' forum and although the author has done a great job explaning the procedure it appears too involved for my level of electrical experience. Appears from the article it would be considerably cheaper than replacing originals with the 'euro lamps' but may be worth the additional cost, certainly seems alot less labor intensive. Also interested if other member(s) have tried either methods of improving the headlights on these old trucks.
I wouldn't do it. Most of those are made in China plastic lenses. They will most likely provide a lousy beam pattern, and turn yellow with age and get all pitted etc. Also the blue tinted so called Xenon bulbs are a waste of money as well. The light may look whiter but the output is actually reduced. All the colored bulbs are is trendy junk. Stay with clear ones.
Here is what I did on my 65 Mustang and the light output is great. Its also cool, because it looks factory. Its just as good or maybe a bit brighter than the lights on my 95 F150. I have a relay setup on them too. I got a relay setup and a pair of Syvania Xtravision 6024XV bulbs. They have the same wattage as the newer capsule bulbs at 55/65. The regular halogen sealed beams are about 35 watts I think. You'll want the relays though, because they will take the added load off of the switch and supply more voltage to the bulbs.
Don't waste your cash on silverstar either. They are tinted bulbs as well. On the halogen sealed beam it may not look like it but the halogen bulb inside is coated just like the silverstar capsule bulbs. Go with clear bulbs only.
I know LMC has relay setups for the newer trucks but I don't know if they have one for yours.
This is the realy setup I have on the Stang. I think you can get the same relays from Bronco Graveyard too.
If you really want H4 / capsule bulb conversion lights then look at Hella or Cibie or Delta. You will still need relays though.
Adding a pair of fog/driving lights is a good upgrade. It would be cool to find some that matched the classic style of the truck. Maybe there are some used ones on Ebay. I don't know what your truck looks like so if its a stream lined hot rod the aftermarket lights may look out of place. You could fab your own brackets and mount them in the grille too if you wanted.
The bright whites does work. I have seem the install on 2 truck so far. The better job of the two sourced a power distribution box from a new model car in a his driverside fender well. He used the radiator core support junction as his tie-in from the original wiring. This way he was able to hide the box and larger wire harness from the untrained eye. I know MADD also sells a kit and provides the instructions on how to wire them in addition to the article on this site.
Having tinkered with rally cars in the past, I only use proper H4 units when upgrading lighting. The lens and reflector patterns are vastly different than most of the junk offered out there. Simply making something brighter does not make it better. You also don't need more than 55w bulbs in a good lighting unit. I've used Hella conversions for years. I would recommend relays in something with an ancient wiring system like our trucks though.
