Another Lock Question

I combed through a bunch of lock threads and I did find an answer but wanted to double check.

I pulled my door lock on my 1950 F1 and had a friend rekey it to my ignition key. Since I didn't have a key before this I couldn't check before an after how the lock worked. I was expecting to be able to unlock the door if it was locked from the inside, I can not. I can lock from the outside and that works. Not sure if that is normal.

I went to an Early V8 Ford Club gathering today so I asked a few people there and they all thought I should be able to unlock from the outside if locked from the inside, one had a truck similar to mine.

So before I tear it apart again I search here. Julie back last July says you can lock the outside or the inside but that they are independent (they can't unlock each other). Since that is the way mine is currently, either Julie and I both have broke/misassembled locks or the guys today never tried to unlock when the inside was locked.

Can anyone with a Bonus Build unlock with the key when the door was locked with the inside handle?

Like Julie said in earlier post, they are independent of each other. When I was a kid I locked the door on my truck, my grandpa got so mad, he had to break a window to get back in the truck. needless to say, I got my bottom tore up when I got home. lol I've never forgot the way it works

I thought that was the case but since I had disagreeing opinions I thought I would ask for a tie breaker. Make sense that you couldn't move that heavy locking bar used with inside lock with the little flimsy key.

They are independent - I've sprung more than one door to get a wire hanger over the inside handle.

Just get the neighborhood kids to cling to the handle pulling/ pushing it. It will sooner or later unlock it. My own kids did that to my poor truck years ago, now I'm trying to fix them~ passenger door fixed, now for the drivers.

They are independant and let me show you why. Just FYI.

Here's a picture of the locking mechanism for the door:

Name: Door Lock 2.jpg
Views: 940
Size: 121.3 KB

Note the bolt and bolt arm runing through the center of the photo out tothe inside door handle.

When you flip the interior handle forward, it moved the inside remote handle mechanism into a detent on that mount that physically locks the handle in place and thus prevents the bolt from sliding back and opening the door. So, that's a hard lock of the bolt in the inside door handle mechanism. You can't see it in this picture, but th espring you see fits into the detent when flipped forward to hold th einside handle in the locked position.

When you lock the outside lock with the key, it raises a jamb up under the cam lock (in th epicture) and physically prevents the blot from sliding open by jamming the cam lock closed.

They are two entirely different mechanical locks and about 18 inches apart. In theory, you can't lock both locks using the interior handle. BUT, if you ever leave your kids in the truck, beware!

Wanna have some fun? Next time you go to this groups meeting, show up after cocktails again and hand one of them the key and ask them to open the door. It will be a MAJOR committee meeting!

Thanks all for confirming/reinforcing of the answer for me. No kids at home but I do like to give rides or let kids sit in my vehicles at shows so I think I will leave my backup entry method in place. There is no lever on the drivers side vent window. I had planned to put one on after fixing the lock. I really only wanted the locks to work to keep honest people out anyway, can't keep crooks out.

Just an update for posterity when someone searches the archives.

After reading some of the workings of the someones slightly later Ford locks I discovered you really can't lock yourself out unless something failes or you really try hard.

When I lock with the handle and slam the door it unlocks. I really have to lock the driverside and slide over and lock the passenger door on the outside.

Yep that's gotta be true, because the connection to the bolt from the handle is a "Hard" connection. If you slam the door hard enough to push in the bolt, it's gotta pop the handle down.

I wouldn't do that too many times as it's gotta be pretty hard on it - epsecially the springs - which are hard to find!
