thinking about buying
the 460 was built back in the late 60s. You could get a 360hp 490tq 460 in the big lincolns. Not sure what the 460 specs were for the mid 70s trucks, but the cars were from 220-270hp I believe.
Not really oil crisis numbers, but I know what you mean. Also, there were a lot of 429 and 370 (same block as the 460) being used in commercial and industrial applications. Lots of school busses and f600-f700 trucks had them. I have an f800 4x4 marmen herrington conversion truck that has the 429 4v, and a school bus with a 370, and an f850 crane truck with a 429 4v engine.

The 7.3L is an undeniable dog when compared performance-wise to the other diesels out there. But at 196K miles, I would not hesitate to go outside, start it up and drive it across the country right now with nothing more than a gallon of oil in the bed to top it off every few days.

My 8000+ pound land rocket is a real weapon now that I have the 120hp tune for it. I dont use it much, but its fun.
My truck 7.3 has 229628 miles on it, and Ill crank it 9 hours to Philidelphia here next month, AND BACK, and ill add less then a drop of oil to it. Its amazing really. My 95 460 truck, has 255xxx on the clock with the original engine, and if it could take a sticker again (rust issue) id crank that ol bugger there....if there were plenty of money in the bank that is; Oh, and Ill need more then a gallon of oil for that one.

If I'm running loaded it'll burn some, but I don't add more than a couple of quarts between changes. It's more than none, but at almost 200K I'm happy with 1/2 gallon makeup rate.
